Any other suggestions?

Ohh one thing I forgot. Bobby pins might be nice for the women.

Question! Credit card? Really? What kind of stuff will we have to buy? Do you think a debit card with X amount of money on it be enough? How much money are we expected to spend?

The reason I’m asking is because I don’t have a credit card. Should I go out and get one?

i dont have a credit card either, just my debit card. do you think they would take checks? (just kidding) thanks to bzzzt for more excellent information!

Preaddressed letters might also be nice. I heard we’re issued deoderant and shampoo. Are women also issued underwear?

You might want to add 50 MPH tape to that list, even though it’ll be available at the C-Store.

Sorry but what is 50mph tape?

Oh and Elyse D, are you the same Elyse I saw at that Nor Cal Almost a Plebe picnic today? If so hi! It’s Jeremiah!

I think its similar to duct tape.

Bobby pins, unless you use them regularly, are the devil. Go with the little metal clip things. You can spray paint them black or whatever color you need…Alternatively, you can color them black with a sharpie and shellack with clear nail polish…

Credit card - for cleaning supplies, etc. at the C-Store. I know I spent quite a bit of money there over the summer for random stuff…There’s an ATM at the mailboxes, so if you need cash, you can get it when you check mail. Just tell your squad leader. I think I spent about 200-300 dollars over the summer, including setting my room up for the academic year.

Shampoo and deoderant are issued. I chucked the deoderant immediately, and used the shampoo to clean my trash can. I brought my own hygiene supplies.

Women are issued underwear. they are HUGE. and ugly. but it’s only for a few weeks :)

100 mph tape is the same as duct tape. Don’t worry about taking any, there will be lots floating around when you need it. When it does come around, take a few feet and wrap it around your lighter…that way you’ll have some handy when you go out to the field later on in the summer.

ya same elyse. hi jeremiah!

You may want to check with the Pentagon Federal Credit Union or USAA about setting up your banking and credit card. It has to be convenient to have service right on post - or on the main street of Highland Falls where both have branches.

also- is it worth bringing sunglasses?

I just recently opened an account with USAA and I love it. The customer service is great. Basically everything is free to open an account and they give you $25 in you new account to spend. They also send you a debit card and from what I understand it also works as a credit card when you turn 18. But just in case my debit card doesn’t work or something I just got a free box of checks too. I would definately recommend this bank to everyone. About the sunglasses, I have no idea. I really hope we can take them and use them because I just bought some Oakleys to bring. Mabey Bzzzt will know.

USAA can provide you with a new credit card as well as insurance for your barracks room. When Our D had her ipod stolen USAA paid for the new one. A great company–we have used them for auto-mortgage-credit card for over 25 years now.

USAA? ROCKS! I have had car insurance through them since I started driving. They actually asked my father if he was sitting down, first, before they gave him the quote to let his 16 year old daughter drive. I also bank with them, they own my cow loan, and I have property insurance through them. Fabulous people. Do get property insurance, it’s something ridiculously cheap while you’re a cadet, maybe $100 a year? And yes, West Point has an honor code, I, too, liked not having to lock my door…but they do kick people out every year for stealing. Like the guy that was stealing all the physics texts in his company and selling them on E-bay. Or the guy whose snowboard got stolen from the trunk room…and while shopping for a replacement (again on E-bay) he found…his snowboard. Photographed in front of his trunk room locker. Name tape clearly visible. Anyway, just a word of warning. Get property insurance.

You will HAVE to set up an account with Pentagon Federal. That is where your travel pay will go, as well as where your cadet account is managed. I used them to cash checks (from USAA)…not much else.

Sunglasses - I’d go with a no for over the summer. They’re not issued so you’re not wearing them. You will get fabulously fashionable safety goggles to protect from eye injuries, though.

The property insurance for a cadet is less than 30 bucks a year–well worth it.

Hmmm…this USAA sounds real good actually. Should I set up an account with them now, or should I wait until sometime during beast or the academic year, considering I already sent in my direct deposit form and didn’t list USAA as the bank to deposit my cadet pay?

You probably shouldn’t change your bank account so near to R day since you have already submitted it. You can always make the changes later after Beast. You CAN however contact them and get things like property insurance set up now if you like.
