My S1 had this scholarship and kept it all four years. I feel for these parents and students. $4,750.00 goes a long way in a state were tuition and fees average less then $7,000.00 per year.

Bump Bump Bump

We’re used to this in Michigan. Our Promise scholarship was cut my freshmen year but it was only like $500 a semester which was just over 1 credit of tuition.

It sucks but what can you do?

In the early '90s, the budget allocated for the NY State Regents scholarship ran so low some older classmates who earned those scholarships ended up receiving scholarship checks for $0.

And yes, one would think that if funds were so short, why expend the costs to print up and mail off checks for zip. This aspect actually made headlines in the local NY papers and caused a bit of controversy towards state officials who were responsible for those scholarships and printing/mailing out checks for $0 to Regents scholarship earners.

Other states have reduced their scholarships too. In Florida, bright futures hasn’t increased the amount of the awards for quite a few years even though tuition has increased (BF pays per credit). It also raised the qualifying SAT/ACT scores and I believe about 50% fewer students qualify now than 4-5 years ago.

I’m sure the not knowing in WV is terrible as it is impossible to plan for college this fall.

We don’t actually mail checks here. The money is transferred straight to the college or university at which the student is enrolled.
