West vs. Linde

As some of you may know, West dorm declared war on Linde dorm while Linde dorm held a dorm meeting, presumably to discuss despicable plans to invade West dorm. Do you have support one dorm in this historical battle? If so, why do you support that dorm?

This is a most difficult decision. I have friends and allies in both dorms. It is much like a civil war - you have brother against brother (in this case, Mudder against Mudder).

So naturally, I support South dorm ;)

WIBSTR

doi. :)

And that was an amazing battle. I was coming back from lab at that time and people were running around with airsoft guns and 2 windows got broken in my dorm…

My son stayed at West during the Admit program, and now of course that is where he wants to be next year. Any tips on filling out the dorm request - or can you just say “I want to be in West?” Or should he just fill out the questionnaire and trust that the sorting hat will choose correctly for him?

Well if your son really wants to be there there is a good chance he’d get in anyway. But, I would do the following:

 1. likes drinking a lot
 2. isn’t athletic and hates sports (West doesn’t hate sports, just putting this ensures he won’t go to North dorm)
 3. doesn’t mind loud music
 4. would like to be close to classes/dining hall (ensures he doesn’t go to Linde dorm, which is the farthest away)
 5. isn’t neat
 6. pyromaniac

That will basically ensure he gets placed into west.

Whoa whoa, wait a minute here…

Roughly 1/3 of West actually doesn’t drink. You just don’t notice it because we are good at blending in. 1/3 drinks socially on occasion… and 1/3 drink regularly.

There are a few Westies that like sports. We compete in the IM sports but we rarely win…

Music: yeah, you gotta be able to handle the music 18/7/

Proximity rocks, that is true.

Meh, some Westies are neat. Actually, Tiyusufaly told me last night that West rooms are, on average, cleaner than South rooms.

Pyromaniac is a plus.

I just put “I love fire (put me in West).” They got the hint.

Can you Mudders characterize the other dorms?

Can you characterize the girls that live in each of the dorms? including possible ratios.

(my estimated male/female ratio at end of each description)

South- Pretty quiet…all rooms are singles. A lot of student who live there like having a quiet community feel…South also is a “retirement home” for seniors who have had enough of partying and such. ~50/50

North- Jock dorm. Beer pong is a popular sport. Pretty noisy…drinks a lot, like West, but seems to be more beer. “That’s gay” and “Your mom” seem to still be acceptable and popular phrases. ~65/35

East- Super-nerd dorm. Undoubtedly, this dorm thrives on RPGs and Magic, the card game. Inasmuch I would like to dispell the stereotypes of East, many walk to class barefoot and don’t keep up with personal hygiene or fashion too much… they are far too busy slaying dragons on their scratch-built computers. Shockingly (and something I try not to think about), a recent survey found Easties to generally have one of the most active sex lives of the Mudd dorms. WoW.~65/35

Sontag - Very nice rooms, pretty quiet. Lucky freshmen who get Sontag rooms will enjoy the company of upperclassmen and the resident professor. They also have kitchens in several suites and I’m extremely jealous of their living conditions. ~60/40

Linde - Linde is a suite-based dorm that has nice rooms. Like Sontag, many of the residents are juniors/seniors but freshman get placed there every year as well. Many Lindies enjoys drinking, drugs (oops…did I say that?), and being at war with West. This is because many of the West burn-outs go to Linde to retire and feel sorry for their newly-pampered a$$es so they try to project their ideals on other people. Too bad West has been kicking their butts in the current war. ~60/40

Case - Fairly quiet, Case has a huge mix of people in it. It seems that there are Eastie types and Northie types all rolled up into one big pink dorm called Case. This place is a mystery. Nothing ever happens here. ~65/35

Atwood - One of the newer dorms, many Atwoodians share the characteristics of Sontagians and Casians. Atwood is a bit of a mystery to me as well. I don’t think I’ve ever actually done anything social there before. ~65/35

West - Saving the best for last, West brings freedom to all that want to break out of the box. The courtyard is littered with remains of trashed TVs, computers, washing machines, and lots of broken glass. There is one mega tire in the courtyard, 2 motorcycles keeping some students’ rooms warm while they sleep next door, a custom built mega-bar, a custom built videogame consol with 3000 games on it and a student-painted 4-square court that is covered in muck and glass. West generally enjoys hanging out, causing “trouble” in the eyes of society, and maintaining one of the highest GPAs on campus. We probably have the strongest and most traditions of any dorm on campus or the 5Cs. We are also currently at war with Linde and using our mega sling-shots, airsoft guns, and spud-cannons to take them down. We may not be good at sports, but we are sure resourceful, and if I may say, sometimes ingenius. Oh, and between the 2AM dryice bombs and the music, we are pretty loud. ~80/20

Ummm, what I said to write down was just what I think would cause the orientation people to place the prefrosh into West. I even noted that some things like “isn’t athletic and hates sports” were just to increase the chances of being put in West. I wasn’t saying that all Westies do those things.

Not true. Fishbowl is all doubles and half of the southie freshmen are placed there.

Plenty of parties go down at Atwood. They have the most suite parties out of ANY dorm, even though they have basically no dorm parties. Suite DB always has stuff going on and I would say that there is one other suite party there a week on average.

I would also like to add the following…

Sontag - “east retirement home”… almost all the suites are full of really nerdy people
Case - Half of case is an “east retirement home”… the other half is full of people who are basically north wannabes. All they seem to do is sit in the lounge in a circle drinking… it’s kind of lame. I’m sorry, but it’s true. This dorm is absolutely dead and nothing goes on besides in topless (25% of the dorm). After next year, Case will be almost 100% nerdy since all the other people are moving out. If you aren’t a real nerd and want to be part of the Mudd partying social life, case is the ABSOLUTE WORST dorm to be in besides east. I would know since I live here now and I absolutely hate it.

And also South is not totally quiet. Compared to North and (especially) West, we are not so loud, but we definitely hold our own compared to the outer dorms. I’ve lived in Atwood and Case in addition to South, and as has been mentioned, they are very quiet and more along the lines of senior retirement apartments. South by comparison has a thriving social life.

“Plenty of parties go down at Atwood. They have the most suite parties out of ANY dorm, even though they have basically no dorm parties. Suite DB always has stuff going on and I would say that there is one other suite party there a week on average.”

I didn’t mean to imply nothing happens there. I just have never done anything there. So you tell me…
