What additional Major would fit BA Theater at USC

Hello there,

My son is in USC Class of 2015 doing Theater Major. He’s interested to double major in something else (as in add a major besides theater). With so many choices to choose from - I would like to know what other students and their parents have to suggest.

Thanks in advance.

I knew a lot of theatre kids who did the entertainment business minor. It seemed to work well with the program.

It would be best to pick something “marketable” – so, something like PR, advertising, business, communications, journalism instead of English, political science, philosophy, etc. Theatre falls in the latter category when it comes to finding job-jobs; you need that backup!

Thanks a lot Zelda for your reply. I agree with you that theater program needs a backup since it does carry it’s own “risks”.

I just noticed this thread and wanted to mention my S2 is also trying a double major with theatre and it’s going to be quite a challenge to get in all the required courses within 4 years unless the student is able to place out of the 2 GEs allowed through APs plus the foreign language requirement. All other AP units count, of course, but they may only be used as elective credit which is not of much use when double majoring. In addition, theatre majors tend to get involved in lots of productions so time management is a must. Still, my S is planning on making it work. :)

Is your son an actor? Does he have an interest in other areas? He might want to visit the career center on campus and ask their advice on what sort of companies recruit on campus and which majors are often in demand.

He may also want to consider taking on a minor (less units required).

The USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences offers a major or minor in Environmental Studies. Whether your son likes science or not, the Environmental Studies major offers a broad range of classes, from biology to political science and economics. I think it is a well-rounded major that can easily be completed as a double major or minor.
