What are BU's academic peers?

I was thinking maybe Tulane, NYU, USC, GWU, UT-Austin, Emory and U.Washington.

I would say that BU is NOT as highly regarded as most of those schools you list, except perhaps GW.

I think it is more in the University of Miami range.

That being said, it is very hard to get into, because everyone wants to go to school in Boston.

It is certainly not a USC or an Emory.

The list was a just a general impression I had.

I just did not figure BU was in the U.Miami range at all.

ARWU, the Chinese world rankings list has BU at 76, while U.Miami is at 101. Times Higher Education, 133 for Miami, while 59 for BU.

I’m thinking perhaps you’re going by the US News rankings, which I barely pay any mind to.

That’s why I listed schools that you don’t think are academic peers of BU. Tulane for sure is. As is NYU which most people compare BU to.

I really think that BU is massively underrated in the States, while it’s held in pretty high regard overseas.

Tulane and UT Austin (and GWU too, I think) are right beside BU in the USNWR.

Which is why I also consider them academic peers.

The gold standard for rankings has been and is USN&WR, For 2012, BU is ranked 53rd along with Fordham; this is an excellent ranking BTW. NYU is ranked 33rd. U-Miami is now ranked 38th. I quote USN&WR as their ranking methodology is known and accepted while “World” rankings like the QS uses, shall we say “different” methodologies. (BTW I find folks who summarily dismiss USN&WR just don’t agree with the rankings of their alma mater or a school of their liking).

While there is a strong similarity between the 3 big private schools of NYC and Boston (Harvard/Columbia -Ivy, Boston College/Fordham -Catholic, NYU/BU -big private), both NYU and Boston College are ranked higher academically than BU. In all other ways BU does compare directly with NYU in many schools and departments.

I would have to agree that Tulane, Stanford and Emory are much higher than BU on many levels…as is reflected in their rankings (all top 25).

I love Tulane and think it is a fabulous school, but at #50 it is really not ranked much different than BU at #53.

Ram Ray, Tulane is ranked #50 and has been ranked that for quite a while.

I never even suggested that BU was = to Stanford.

USNWR rankings tend to really focus on undergraduate education, which is why I tend to look at the other rankings as being a bit stronger. Some suggest that CGS is what keeps BU in the mid range.

Either way 53 is a strong ranking out of what…200 schools ranked in US News?

I really think BU’s strongest academic peers are NYU, Tulane, GWU and maybe UT-Austin.

Real quick, im from pennsylvania, therefore penn state is the way most go. What do you think between BU and penn state? which is more “prestigious” if you will? Cause i’ve read rankings that have psu around 45 and BU around 50, which seems backwards to me.

Penn State is an excellent flagship state school, which BU wouldn’t be too far in comparison.

BU, like NYU, is a large private university comparable to big flagship state schools in academic reputation (UT-Austin, Penn State, maybe U.Mich but that’s pushing it).
