<p>You gotta create change from within. Groups are rarely swayed by other groups. Also, a lot of them don’t believe that conservatism should be based on social values in the first place. This actually makes a lot of sense because much of classic conservatism is about limiting the government’s influence on people’s lives, e.g. on personal affairs like marriage.</p>

<p>I felt they shuffled him off to be Homeland Security as a way of killing his political career. He’s known for being liberal on social issues (his stance on abortion was one of the major issues in Bush not choosing him, not sure how he stands on gay marriage), so if the republicans finally wake up and realize they need to appeal to social moderates and fiscal conservatives he’ll have a great shot. Otherwise we’ll probably wind up with some deeply religious candidate who’ll get slaughtered by Obama no matter how the economy/war/country’s doing.</p>

If they dump the social issues, they will lose the religious right, which is their most important base. And if they dump the economic issues, they’ll lose their more “influential” supporters. The Republicans are screwed. I just hope they fall quickly and don’t cause too much damage.</p>
