What are Columbia student's perceptions of the California Schools?

Both public and private, specifically Stanford, USC, UC Berkeley, and UCLA.

to take from another thread:

Columbia is IVY therefore none of those other schools can match it, we are FAR better in terms of undergrad edu, some hippy software geek vs. President OBAMA. They’re all pretentious considering they were our safety schools.

to be honest though, we don’t think about cal schools, there isn’t even a trend, let alone uniform opinion, I don’t know how it matter what columbia students think of cal schools, this is one of the dumbest threads I’ve seen.

Totally right.

Also, only the CA kids will have strong opinions about the CA schools.

FYI I’m from California and the entire public school system (including UCLA and Berkeley) there is crumbling rapidly. They’ve already taken roughly a 1/3rd cut from their budget. Lots of cancelled classes, ballooning class sizes, crumbling student resources, mass layoffs, etc.

As for the private schools… Stanford is great if you can get in, and USC is crap unless you’re going in for business undergrad or dental school grad.

Is that a feeling that a majority of Columbia students feel? I don’t really care what Columbia kids think of California kids, but I’m sort of concerned about the pretentiousness that pours from every orifice of that statement.

^I honestly thought the sarcasm was dead obvious, I was making fun of the “what do columbia students think of NYU” thread, fail.

coocoocachoo, don’t worry about confidentialcoll. He or she was just spoofing. Spoofing is big sport at many elite schools–it’s part of the fun!

Yeah, if Columbia students were really that elitist, they’d be Princeton students.

Yeah, if Princeton students were really that elitist, they’d be billionaires without going to college.

Yeah if they were billionaires without going to college, they’d be … I don’t know.

Honestly, I originally came to CA from NYC, having wanted to go to Columbia but having a bit of an anxiety attack over old issues of self-worth and fear of the privilege I might encounter there. I figured, why not a great state school? California has two, UCLA and UC-Berkeley, and others up and coming.

But once I got here I realized how terrible the situation with the deficit is, and how it seems as though the universities always suffer the worst of the cuts. If there was any doubt in my mind before, it’s gone: I’ll be applying to Columbia from Santa Monica College this Fall semester.

I don’t think any state really thinks much about any other state’s schools, but if you’re from California you’ve probably got a pretty good idea at what an awful place we’re in right now with all the budget problems.
