When they talk about building a loft in a dorm room, are they usually bunk beds? If your bed is 5 feet off the ground, where do you sit when you’re just hanging out?

Well, it is going to depend on who and what college is doing the talking. Often, a lofted dorm bed refers to a bed that is actually built into the structure of the room and is at a height that you would typically find the upper bed of a bunk bed. Rooms in that style are actually built with both beds in the room lofted. In other cases, a college may refer to a lofted dorm bed as one that is not attached to the structure but at the height of the upper bed of a bunk bed and with no lower bed (it is just on very high legs). In the lofted bed arrangements what students very often do is put couches, low chairs, TV’s etc. under the bed.

Lofted at my school is where your bed is up on top of your dresser and closet. It is a huge space saver… except I always unlofted mine because i’m afraid of sleeping up that high.

Also they’re the bane of the universe when you have to get up in the morning. Trust me, in the long run if you have the space to deloft it’s definetely worth it!

Yeah, my sister always took her bunked beds apart because it made for two couches sort of, for people to hang out in, and it’s also nicer because you don’t have to literally climb into bed. Doesn’t lofting a bed also mean just putting it in little stilts, like cinder blocks, to allow just a little more space to fit things underneath? Or is that called something else?

I’m certainly not the official word on this, but I don’t think elevating the bed for extra storage would qualify as a “loft” bed. I think you have to have 2 distinct levels that a person can actually be in, like bed on the top and desk or seating below.

I’ve seen lofts where students have their desk and computer under their bed. How safe are lofts - couldn’t it fall on top of you while you’re working and someone is lounging on your bed? Is it worth saving the space?

i love lofts

It’s like not having a bed in your dorm and it frees up a lot of space
