My freshman and sophomore year I had audio processing disorder, which made it difficult for me to process the information when a teacher would lecture. Not until my junior year did guidance, my teachers, and myself create a system where I could record what the teachers said in class and re-listen to it whenever I desired. This helped a lot because at the end of the first semester of my junior year I had around a 4.0 GPA, but then my father was diagnosed with cancer and spent the remaining months of my junior year in and out of the hospital. Which, sadly, greatly affected my second semester grades for junior year.

My dad is now in remission and I feel that there is nothing that can distract from my senior year grades. Currently I have all A’s in my senior year.

I am going to talk about these events in my essays.

I talk about the challenges I faced in my essays and they made me a better person and ready to tackle challenges that I will face in the future.

Can I get in?

so you need to make sure you UC GPA (google uc gpa calculator and enter grades) is over 3.4, which is the minimum requirement to apply as OOS for UC’s.

if it is, your scores and GPA are a bit on the low side for OOS UCLA… definitely definitely mention your situations throughout high school and explain why your GPA is low in your essays

but make sure your essay is unique to yourself because many people have challenges and become better people after the challenges.

Can your family pay the ~$50,000 per year it would cost if you get in as an OOS student?

Senior grades are not considered in admissions decisions for the UCLA unless you are borderline applicant and they send you a supplemental. You need to calculate your UC GPA: http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
OOS applicants can only use AP/IB/DE courses for the extra honors points.

You essays will help your chances but you need to bump your test scores.

Good luck.

Remember that financial aid and scholarships are few and far between for OOS students.

Your current SAT would not be competitive with instate students.
