What are my chances at CSU Long Beach, SDSU, and Cal Berkley?

Hello all!

I was wondering what my chances of getting into these 3 schools would be. Here are my stats so far:

Current High School Junior ( out-of-state )

Weighted GPA: 4.08

I have not taken the SAT or ACT ( taking them in the spring and fall )

PSAT: 1210

ADV/AP Classes Taken/Taking this Year and 1st/2nd Semester Grades ( X, X ):

ADV Physical Science ( A, A )
ADV Biology ( A, A )
ADV Chemistry ( A, n/a )
AP Biology ( B, n/a )
ADV 11th LA ( B, n/a )

Planning to take Senior Year:
ADV Spanish 4
AP Calculus A/B
AP Psych ( maybe )

Extracurriculars:
President of Science Honor Society
Spanish Honor Society
Leadership Club
Junior Senate Club
No Place for Hate Club
Key Club
Chemistry Club

Varsity Cheerleader all 4 years ( I was already named Captain for my Senior Year! )

  • 6 Months of weekly volunteering at the Hospital
  • Made Honor Roll every year
  • Volunteering at Humane Society for 2 month so far

Cal Berkley seems like a bit of a stretch for me, but I don’t know!

Thank you all for your help xx

Can you afford these schools without financial aid? UCB would be around $60K/year and CSULB and SDSU around $36-40K/year?

CSULB and SDSU admit by eligiblity index and major. No essays, LOR’s or EC’s considered.

You need to calculate your CSU/UC GPA (capped weighted- up to 8 semesters of extra honors points) first and then have an SAT score.

EI= (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math+EBRW).

CSU/UC GPA calculator:
For an OOS applicant, only AP/IB or DE courses taken 10-11th grade count in the GPA calculation.

Make sure you meet all the a-g course requirements for the Cal States and UC’s including a year of a visual/performing arts course.
http://www.ucop.edu/agguide/a-g-requirements/

For SDSU, an EI of 4100+ can be competitive and for CSULB an EI of 3900+ is competitive.

For UCB, here is the Freshman profile. Strive at or above the average GPA and test scores to be competitive.

GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students

High School GPA (capped weighted): 4.15 - 4.30
ACT Composite Score: 30 - 34
ACT English Language Arts : 28 - 32
SAT Evidence Based Reading & Writing: 640 - 730
SAT Mathematics: 640 - 760
SAT Essay: 16-20

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:
UCB: 14%

UCB’s application review:

  • Berkeley
    *
  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores

  • Important: Extracurricular activities, Volunteer work, Work experience

  • Considered: Character/personal qualities, First generation college student, State residency

  • Note: Thorough review of academic performance; likely contribution to intellectual and cultural vitality of the campus; diversity in personal background and experience; demonstrated qualities in leadership, motivation, concern for others and community; non-academic achievement in the performing arts, athletics or employment; demonstrated interest in major.

  • LOR’s by invitation only as of 2017

Make sure you run the Net Price calculators for all schools and show the information to your parents to make sure these school are affordable before applying.

Thank you! Very informative

you are a very strong candidate for SDSU and CSULB - UCB, however is 60/40 against you due to both your GPA and SAT.

UCR and UCSC also merit an application as they use the same ap as UCB and both are likely to admit you. .

I’d add that you should be very careful with Calc Sr year. It is known as a GPA killer at most schools. Talk to some current students and see what they think. At my son’s school, nobody passed the class 2 years ago. It upended several UC admissions… Unless you are really adept at math, take AP Stat or something else.

good luck.
