Currently a sophomore at Hunter College
- Part of the Hunter Scholars Program
- Deans List fall+spring semester 2014-2015
- GPA: 3.738 (plan to raise this hopefully)
- SAT: 1990 (M:700ish CR&W: 600ish each [don’t remember exact numbers]
- High School GPA: 3.68 unweighted (3.75 weighted)
- Interned at local government over the past summer, tutor, christian club, (I should do more…)
Schools I’ve been told to look at are:
- Wellesley College
- Mount Holyoke
- Smith College
- Emory
- Bowdoin
- Cornell
- Amherst
- Williams
- Boston College
- Swarthmore
- Middlebury
- NYU
- Tufts University
- Northwestern
I’m almost certain that most of these schools are out of my reach. I was accepted into NYU as a freshmen but I wasn’t sure what area of study I wanted to pursue at the time and didn’t want to spend 40k+ per year when I wasn’t sure what I wanted. But now it’s not a problem. My only goal is to get into the best school I can with my grades (isn’t it everyone’s goal though? :P)
So basically, being brutally honest is there anything I can do to better my chances at getting accepted at these schools? More specifically at Mt. Holyoke, Wellesley and NYU. These schools are amazing but my grades are not, people with better grades get rejected all the time, so should I even bother applying to these schools?
D: any feedback would be much appreciated!!
What is your current major and what is the net tuition/fees cost to you at Hunter? How much is the Hunter Scholars Program worth annually? In addition to “goal is to get into the best school I can with my grades”, what will any of these schools provide that Hunter is not meeting at this time? Any plans to go on to grad school after undergrad? How do to you plan to pay for Mt. Holyoke or Wellesley or NYU?
Hi thanks so much for replying!
- I’m a history major with thoughts to minor in psychology, sociology (this is not set in stone yet)
- I’m paying about $12k per year at Hunter and receiving about $2,600 in merit scholarships per year
- My main reason for wanting to transfer out of Hunter is because I do not like the environment (a reason why I’m hesitant to want to transfer to NYU I would much rather get out of the city) Hunter also does not offer majors in other fields I want to look into (primarily communications), these are not the only two reasons but I do not wish to stay at Hunter.
- I will be applying to grad school most definitely.
- Tuition is not a problem for me. I will not be asking for financial aid either.
Something I want to reiterate is that fact that although Hunter is a great school, I personally just don’t feel like it’s the right school for me. When deciding to attend Hunter I did not plan to stay all 4 years and only attended because I had no clue as to what areas of study I would be interested.
Hoped that helped? D: do you think I have a shot at any of these other schools?
