What are my chances for University of Michigan (Ross), Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, and Columbia

I am a female student from north carolina. I am asian specifically chinese. I want to know what are my chances at these schools if I am applying as a computer science major with a minor in entrepreneurship. At Umichigan, I am also applying to Ross but my home school is LSA for Computer Science.

My unweighted gpa is a 4.0. I am in the top 3% of my highschool class. My weighted gpa is a 4.6. My SAT score is a 1520, 780 math and 740 reading/writing. I have no subject tests. My AP exams are fairly average. I never got any fives only fours and threes so I am sending my fours.

I have several leadership positions and stem/business activites. I co founded a club in highschool. I am a VP of a club. I have done an internship and a research program at a university. I have played tennis 3/4 years of highschool.

My essays a pretty decent. I would not say they are exceptional but they are alright. They answer the questions clearly.

Please let me know what you think my chances are! Thanks Guys !!!

Hey, this seems great I believe. I think its better to submit just SAT test results as its above 85th percentile I believe and pretty competitive. Due to Covid-19, its better not to submit APs I think but if the university insists of recommends then I think you should apply.

I am telling this because you got amazing SAT scores which deals with math and English but coming to AP, the admissions committee will note subject based scores… If you just submit your SAT scores, they would consider that you equally posses same amount of work in subject examinations.

This is just a thought with regards to AP. And I would highly recommend you to add if you have done any volunteering and community services through high school.

MOST IMPORTANTLY ESSAYS! 50% amounts for essays and LOC giving a slightly higher rate to essays. Just show them that you have done enough and more reasons for you to attend. If essay is not ur strong factor, then I am not sure but then try to get a stellar recommendations from your favorite subject teachers…

Id say you have a good chance at GT and UMich, you’d probably get in. For Carnegie, its not as sure, but definitely a strong chance. Columbia is the reach here, especially bc you’re not that confident in your essays. Columbia is just too competitive. But you’ve done really well in hs, and none of these schools will be a bad place for u and you’ll do great in life. Good luck!

OOS is always a reach at Michigan and especially Ross. Dual major in Ross and CS is a very tough road. Talk to an advisor once accepted. So many get deferred at Michigan. So plan on RD rounds. Entrepreneurship at Michigan is a great minor that my senior engineering son is doing now. Plan on being very busy with it. Also you don’t need Ross to do business at Michigan. Tons of opportunities based on your interest. Combining business and CS is a great avenue also with either one a minor or major

Georgia Tech is definitely a reach here too, mostly because of all of your factors, standardized test scores are among the best ones, but they are the ones held in lower priority by Georgia Tech. You can read all the posts here about the many applicants with 36 ACT scores who were rejected. Out-of-state status counts against you too. It would also be good if you had a couple of 5s on the APs, but 4s work very well too. Don’t submit the 3s. But that top 3% in the class helps you a LOT. Georgia Tech also looks for well-rounded students (no shortage of computer-whiz brainiacs with prestigious awards and research at this school). Thus, you should take care to describe your ECs, not just present them as afterthoughts, which is kind of what you did here. You should talk more about your prior university research. Also, what’s up with the essays? If they’re not that great, you should consider submitting them to a competent essay reviewer. As for recommendations, make sure you get the best ones possible. You do have a shot.

I think you have a good chance at UMich!! AP scores might be your one downfall, but the GPA, SAT score, and extracurriculars all qualify you. If your essays are on the better side, you definitely have a good shot! I would do CS major with Ross minor, but it’s really up to you.
