What are my chances in duke, unc chapel hill, virginia tech and boston college

<p>Just wondering what my chances of getting into these colleges are: duke, unc chapel hill, virginia tech and boston college. </p>

<p>Ethnicity: Cuban American
Gender: Male </p>

<p>Freshman year I didn’t do too well and ended with a GPA around 2.97(no honors classes) sophomore year I stepped it up and finished with a GPA of 3.7777(no honors classes). I switched schools after sophomore year and am now starting my junior year and am working as hard as ever, I’m in only 3 honors courses, but it’s better than nothing and plan to take more honors and APs senior year. (At least there’s an uprising trend)
Even though my GPA isn’t amazing, I plan on doing extremely well this year and doing my best on the sat and act. Along with this, I have really strong extracurriculars </p>

<p>Extracurriculars: I’m in 4 clubs(still joining more) and am currently in the process of founding one(and will be the president of) to help kids in Congo. I also run varsity cross country and am planning on playing varsity men’s volleyball or track in the spring(by the way, does anyone recommend which would look better?) </p>

<p>Along with this I have been competing in the sport of competitive jump rope for half my life(8 years). It has led me to traveling all over the country and world, teaching workshops, being in commercials, and even participating in the 87th annual Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. I’ve been the AAU junior Olympic. male overall champion for my division, and have received 2nd overall at the AAU junior Olympics for both double Dutch and pairs. I’m also a national champion for my division and 3rd in the entire country disregarding age groups. I traveled to Hong Kong this summer to participate in the 2014 FISAC IRSF World Rope Skipping Championships, where I represented team USA, won third place, and was selected by the head coach to be the flag bearer for the opening ceremony. </p>

<p>The sport has given me so much and I have been able to give back to the community by teaching the youth how to jump rope and how amazing it is what one rope can do.</p>

<p>Like I said, my GPA isn’t perfect, but my extracurriculars make me stand out and make me diverse and much different than most applicants. Sorry I wrote so much, but thanks for the help! </p>

<p>Oh and I am probably going to be inducted to most of the honor society’s by my senior year. It would mean so much if I got into duke because during my sophomore year I had a meeting with my guidance counselor and he asked me where my #1 choice was and when I told him duke he just laughed at me and told me I wasn’t fit for it</p>

<p>You always have a chance, but with your grades, your chances are essentially zero at those schools (but I’m not as familiar with Virginia Tech so I’m not sure about that one). The only thing you have going for you is an improvement. But you also didn’t take honors classes freshman and sophomore years, which, even if it may not be true, can show them that you tend to take the easy route and don’t challenge yourself. The fact that you didn’t even get As in those non-honors classes doesn’t look good either, since most people applying to Duke, UNC, and BC get close to straight As in their classes, which are mostly honors/AP classes. </p>

<p>I’m not sure but if you’re a national champion in jump rope it doesn’t make a difference it doesn’t matter if you do varsity or track. Do what you want and if you don’t actually want to do either then I doubt it would make a big difference. Take the hardest classes possible your senior year, do well on the sat, and enjoy your last years of youth. </p>

<p>SAT/ACT scores? Don’t be discouraged, there’s always a chance! Make sure you have high standardized test scores to make up for your GPA, write a kickass essay and supplements and have good recs. Good luck! I’m also applying to Duke, UNC and BC :slight_smile: </p>

<p>I haven’t taken them but am planning to do well. My GPA is around a 3.3 but I plan on kicking ass these next two years. Thankfully unc doesn’t look too much at GPA because of the different systems all over the place. </p>
