I’m currently a junior studying accounting and attending University of Northern Iowa. Its a small school, but their business school is prestigious well-known. The program is also very rigorous in that the average GPA is around a 2.6 or 2.7 (close to what you’d expect at a typical engineering school). Despite that, my overall GPA is currently 3.27 (3.34 in Upper-Level Accounting Classes and 3.21 in Accounting/Support Classes). Anyway, I am currently in the process of looking for my first accounting internship, but am currently undecided between Tax and Audit. I wanted to apply to the some of the Big 4 firms but was told that many require a 3.3 to even be considered. I’m currently taking an online class right now and the highest my GPA will be is a 3.29.
Now as far as my resume is concerned, I’ve involved in my school’s accounting club by attending all the events and networking, etc. I’ve also been an active senate member in the dorm halls in which I’ve lived, though unfortunately I’ve never been an RA. In less than a month from now, I’ll be doing some office work at the on-campus dining center.
Another thing, I’ll be taking Intermediate Accounting 2 and Accounting Information Systems this fall, along with 4 other support classes. So technically, I won’t be a senior until next Spring when I take Tax and Audit. Will this affect my chances of getting an internship as I hear that most internship candidates have finished with both Intermediate Accounting classes.
I also have plans to sit for the CPA after meeting the 150 credit hour requirement by adding a second major in Finance.
Any suggestions?
