I’m wondering where I stand. I either want to apply for engineering or business…I can’t decide between the two. I’ve been told that engineering is VERY selective, so should I even bother? If I did choose engineering I’d go with Industrial. With business, I’d probably do business administration. They both intrigue me, but I’d rather be realistic about where I’m going to apply.
Academic Background:
4.1 WGPA, 3.7 UGPA, Class rank: 58/690 (92%)
AP’s taken: Human Geography, European History, US History
Honors: Geometry, Algebra 2, Chemistry, Physics
Regular (no honors offered): Biology, French 1-3
Regular (chose non-honors): English 9-11, Pre-Calculus
SAT (new out of 1600): 1300, 690 Reading/Writing, 690 Math
I’m planning to retake in fall, but not really seeing any huge improvement in score. Maybe 1400 at the most?

AP Physics C: Mechanics (over one year, that’s the only physics my school offers)
Extracurricular Background:
French Club: member one year, treasurer two years, president one year

National Young Leaders Conference: attended freshman year
Childcare Leader job: three years since sophomore year (20 hours a week)

Only San Jose State, Cal Poly SLO and Pomona offer Industrial Engineering. Regarding Business, only UCB, UCI and UCR have Business schools that offer Business admin. So which schools are your considering?
All the CSU’s admit by major and Eligibility index (CSU GPA X 800) + (SAT Math + CR). SLO is the exception and they use an MCA point system. Determine your EI and which CSU’s you are interested in and repost.
Ethnicity will not help with the CSU’s/UC’s since they banned affirmative action. You need to look at private schools for your URM status. Will you be needing FA? Are you in-state CA resident?
CSU/UC GPA = 3.95
Index: I did (3.95*800)+1300(does this still work with the new SAT?) and I got 4460.

I guess I’d consider all 6 of those schools honestly. I’d also like to ad CSUF to your list for business.
SJSU/SDSU/CPP: Match schools for Industrial Engineering and Business Admin
SLO uses 9th grades in their CSU GPA calculation. Business a Match, Industrial Engineering a High Match
For the UC’s:
UCR: Match
UCI: High Match
UCB: Reach
The other UC’s do offer Business Econ which might be of interest but not a regular Business major.
Top CSU’s for business would be SLO and SDSU.
I would also consider Cal State Fullerton for Business Admin and Long Beach state which should be Match schools.
If you are not sure about Business Admin or Industrial Engineering, I would consider the CSU’s that offer both. Just an FYI: Switching from Business to Engineering could be difficult so you may need to choose one or the other during the application cycle. Easier to move from Engineering to Business than the other way around.
Thanks for your advice. Do you think I would have a better chance at getting admitted for business or engineering? Is there a major difference in selectivity between schools?
Engineering is extremely competitive.
Business would be an easier admit in comparison to Engineering, but Industrial Engineering would not be as competitive as Mechanical/CS/Aerospace/BME or CSE.
I’ll second most of the comments above, generally, Biz is an easier admit than Engineering, though that is not always true. Switching between them can be a challenge at many campuses. Be sure you understand the requirements before you decide where to attend.
I’d encourage you to apply to UCI, UCR, SDSU CPSLO, and CPP as well as LB.
