I am a decent high school student. I took mostly honors and AP but didn’t thrive. My junior year I went to a middle college high school and began taking most of my classes at a community college to earn dual credit. My GPA my freshman year was a 4.0, my sophomore year was awful, tanked to a 3.2, my junior year is a 3.5. I also do 70 hours of internships each semester. I do play sports, basketball and swim my freshman year, novice water polo team captain my sophomore year, JV water polo and Varsity swim my junior year, and nothing my senior year. As far as SAT’s go, I didn’t study. My scores turned out to be a M:480 / CR: 530 / W: 480 I am also apart of several clubs including Key Club. My current GPA is a 3.6 and I have 25 college credits. Any idea what my chances are to being accepted? I am still in my senior year, and I applied to these schools: UCI, UCDavis, UCSD, UCSC, UCR, SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly Slo, CSUSM, CSUChico. Also, I was raised by a single mother and our income is about 35K a year if that helps, and she is also gay.

CPP/Chico: Match
UCR: High Match
SLO/SDSU/UCSC: Low Reach
UCI/UCD: Reach

My intended major is zoology or animal science. Schools that don’t offer those majors my major choice was general biology
I stand by my chances since Animal Science along with Biology are competitive at both SLO and CPP (which might be a High Match instead of a Match) since these are impacted major at both Cal Poly campuses. Since the Cal states base their admissions on test scores and GPA only, your SAT score has decreased your chances significantly for several of these schools.
For the UC’s, GPA, test scores, HS course rigor and essays are emphasized in your application review. GPA is below the average for all UC’s listed and SAT score is way below the average so by not studying, it probably eliminates all but UCR.

Thank you! I figured, I never really study. Probably a big mistake not doing so for the SAT, but with all my extra curricular, college credits, and financial issues I hope they look more into that. I figured for the most part, I enjoy school but I am not going to say I work hard, that is a lie. I do bare minimum. It just happens to be that I am quite intelligent, a great memorizer and a great writer. That is why I always excel in my History, English, and Biological Science courses. Plus with so much volunteer hours at a vet’s office I hope that puts me in a higher position at SLO or Pomona.
EC’s at CPP are really not considered and for SLO EC’s only contribute to only about 10% of the MCA score that they calculate towards admission consideration. GPA and test scores are the main criteria.
