What are my chances of getting into Northeastern?

Junior from Arizona (Phoenix area)

Current unweighted GPA: 3.3
Current weighted GPA: 3.8
By the time I graduate, I will have taken 7 AP courses and 6 honors courses.
My school doesn’t rank. Or maybe they just don’t tell us until senior year.
First Generation College Student
Multiracial (Hispanic/White)
Jewish

Test Scores:
Just took my SAT today, but on the practice I got about 1880. I took a prep course so I’m hoping for 2000.
I’m also taking my ACT in February. I got a 29 on the practice, I’m hoping for a 30.

Religious Extracurriculars:
Junior year-President of Temple Chai Temple Youth (TCTY, a Jewish youth group)
Sophomore Year-Programming Vice President of TCTY
Senior year-I will most likely be Regional President of the Southwest Region of the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY-SW, a large affiliation made up of Jewish youth groups like TCTY from Arizona, Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Texas)
All years-Hebrew High School Student (attend two hours of class every week on topics such as Israel, the Holocaust, etc. Students who complete Hebrew High School receive a special diploma upon graduation)

Founder of Camp Swift Club (explained below)

Community Service:
Camp Swift (about 1500 hours)-Camp Swift is a summer camp for underprivileged inner-city children from the Phoenix area. The camp is planned and run by Jewish teenagers who volunteer their time not only during the summer, but throughout the year to plan camp and raise money. (These hours include 12 sessions of camp plus planning and fundraising throughout all four years)
I have participated in other community service projects including playing the piano for retirement home residents, assembling toiletry baskets for Hurricane Katrina victims, volunteering at food banks and homeless shelters, and American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. These other activities add up to roughly 200 hours total.

Other Important (or maybe not important?) Factors:
-I will be paying for my own college/graduate school
-My cousin is my legal guardian. My mother died when I was seven and I don’t know who my father is. I’m hoping I can use my experiences to write some compelling essays. Also, if you know of any scholarships for adopted, single-parent children, etc., that would be great!

I’d like to go to medical school eventually, but I don’t know if I necessarily want to major in science.

I know this was really long. Thanks so much for your input!

Your area will help, considering I doubt many from your general area apply to Northeastern. Regardless, your GPA and SAT scores will be a little low, if you submit them. I would think that a 29 or 30 ACT would be a better score submission to up your chances.

Also, you’re not multiracial. If you’re Hispanic, you ARE white. There’s White/Hispanic (Mexico, South America, Central America), or White/Non-Hispanic (Europe, Australia, Canada.) My Mexican friend insists upon that, so I just thought I’d point that out to you. So, on your apps, you’d really just be White/Hispanic. You are of more than one ethnicity, however. (Tch, I know. Technical, technical…)

If you’re going to write your essay about that, please be sure that you approach it in such a way that it doesn’t make it seem like you’re trying to guilt-trip the admissions.

I believe the general score for Northeastern are… 1950/1980ish SAT, 3.6+ UW GPA. I could be wrong, but.

That’s all I have for you! G’luck. (:

Thanks for your quick reply! You’re right about the location-I talked to an admissions officer at a college fair, and they said that the Southwest had the least amount of applicants.

Quick clarification-My mother was from Argentina. You are very much correct in that I would qualify as just being White/Hispanic-but the problem is that they are usually listed separately on applications. Makes more sense your way though!

As a southwesterner (ish), I say you’re in as long as you score around your expected SAT.

wow isnt it a bit late to be taking the tests?

I’m a junior, so I’m actually taking the tests as early as possible. If I was a senior I’d definitely be behind haha.

I never actually told you what I thought of your chances. Not very helpful, am I? (x

Out of a range of ten (10 being definitely in) you’re a solid 8. Only because I’m not an admissions person & don’t completely trust my judgment.

Sorry for forgetting. Also, I don’t know if I read your ACT/SAT thing incorrectly earlier, but yeah, if you were to just submit your ACT scores (assuming they’re a 29,) you’d be good. Ethnicity, area, and rigor would make up for the GPA!

ooooooooooooooo haha sorry. i just saw that part and didnt read into it

I think you have a really great chance! I got in with a 1930 superscored SAT and a 31 ACT. I only took 4 APs. I think that my essay had a lot to do with my admission, if that is helpful. I too want to go to med school and applied to the biology program. Good luck! I think that co-op could be really valuable to you too, since you are paying for it all yourself! You’ll most likely get a good scholarship too, I got 12,000 first semester then 6,000 ever semester after. Good luck with the rest of Jr year!

Thank you so much! Good luck to everyone! :)
