What are my chances of getting into The George Washington University?

Hi everyone, I was wondering what you thought about my chances of getting into GW (based on what I have right now). This school is definitely my dream because I love the way GW fosters innovation and is located in the epicenter of federal jobs. I would love to study chemistry and forensic chemistry there and ultimately become a forensic investigator/technician. I’m applying for Fall 2017 admission, so I am currently a junior in high school.

Here’s my stats:
Weighted GPA: 3.94

Projected SAT score (based on the PSAT): 1950-2000
I’m still waiting on my scores from a February make-up test.

SAT2: Taking Chemistry and Spanish by the end of junior year
ACT: Taking in April

By the end of senior year these will be the classes I’ve taken:

Science: Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1
Math: Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II, Honors Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB
English: Honors English I, Honors English II, Honors English III, Honors English IV
Language: Spanish II, Spanish III, Spanish IV, AP Spanish
History: Honors World History, Honors U.S. History, AP U.S. History

Academic electives: AP Psychology, Honors Organic Chemistry, Honors Engineering

Activities/Leadership/Extracurriculars:

  • National Honor Society
  • Spanish Honor Society
  • JV tennis (1 year), Varsity tennis (3 years)
  • President of our Girl Up chapter
  • Leadership Summit for Girl Up in Washington D.C., lobbied at Congress to advocate for gender equality globally
  • Member of the Stitching for Leukemia Club and Video and Film Club
  • Johnson and Johnson Technology Awareness Program (required a competitive interview process), letter of recommendation from J&J administrators for my presentation skills and understanding of technology in business
  • Peer Mentor (meeting with freshmen groups twice a month and leading modules to teach freshmen about bullying, violence, depression, stereotypes, etc. and help them have a smoother transition into high school), also required a competitive application process that only accepted about 15% of applicants
  • Peer Plus member (meeting with the special needs students at the high school monthly and organizing parties, crafts, lessons, and activities to foster a warm and welcoming environment for these students), Note: only Peer Mentors can be members of Peer Plus
  • 100+ hours of community service related to Girl Up (fundraising directly for the UN Foundation and Girl Up initiative), Autism Speaks, The Alzheimer’s Association, and from being an active volunteer at my local nursing home
  • Active Girl Scout for 12 years
  • Girl Scout Bronze Award, Silver Award, Leadership Award
  • Award of Character Excellence

I’m preparing my Why GW essay and I’m focusing on the university more than Washington D.C.
My common app essay is about the astronomical impact that tennis has had on my life.

I’m visiting in a few weeks!

Any thoughts? I know it’s soon to start thinking about it but I’d love to hear what everyone thinks. Thank you all so much :slight_smile:

If the Naviance scattergrams for our high school are any indicator, I’d say that you are in good shape, assuming that your SAT scores end up around 2000; although if you can get your GPA up over 4.0, then your chances should be even better.

@gandalf78 Thank you!! I heard GW is now SAT/ACT optional, do you think that if my score doesn’t end up to be 2000 that it’s still worth sending it?

Of course; you have nothing to lose!

In terms of your test scores and the pending ACT test, you might consider a test preparation service; that helped to boost test scores into the upper part of the predictive range.
