So I am currently a second year student in Northern Virginia Community College. I would like to transfer to either Georgetown University or University of Virginia to major in Finance and perhaps minor in Computer Science, albeit Georgetown is my first choice and ultimate dream school.
Major details: 18 years old, Female, Filipino
High School GPA: 3.9
SAT: 1920 (will retake if I have to, as lowest score was in the Writing portion)
EC: Future Business Leaders of America (Secretary 1 year and Member 4 years), Key Club (4 years)
College GPA: 3.82
Credit Hours: 38 ATM
EC: Vice President/Co-Founder of Finance Club, Diverse Professionals Association Member
Work Experience: Accounting Clerk at a dealership (1 year), Current Job as Finance Assistant for a printing company.
I would just like to know my chances on being accepted to these schools, or if there is any advice on increasing my chances. Thoughts?
Your HS and college GPAs are good. Did your HS do weighted grades? Your SAT score unfortunately is not competitive. The two schools you’ve mentioned are quite prestigious and highly competitive. I would say if you can manage to retake your SAT and are able to increase your score to above 2100+ that would greatly increase your chances.
This may be unrealistic, though. As a transfer student, I know that retaking your SAT can be costly and time consuming. You have been in school for two years now, though, so if you studied and worked hard, you could potentially raise your score to 2000+.
Your ECs are good. Your SAT scores are the weakest part of your application, definitely. They don’t necessarily mean you won’t be accepted, but you’re up against transfers with near perfect SAT scores. I don’t know too much about Virginia, but Georgetown is also very rigid with their pre requisites. You need to make sure that you’ve completed all the courses necessary for transfer before submitting an application. Obviously you don’t want to be rejected because you haven’t finished a required course!
You might consider researching some smaller liberal arts colleges that don’t require transfers to submit SAT scores. Schools I applied to that are test-optional for transfers include Hamilton College, Wesleyan University, Swarthmore College, and Franklin & Marshall College.
