What are my chances of getting into UNC or NC State

I just graduated and was first accepted into Ithaca College in NY for journalism and several other schools. But then I
decided I would not attend any of these schools. I am a North Carolina resident and I’ve decided to go into teaching into.
What are my chances of getting into UNC or NC State? I have a 4.1 weighted GPA, and a 25 on the ACT. My reading and English scores were nearly perfect. Science was average and math was what dragged my score down. Should I retake the ACT? Do I have any chance without retaking the ACT?

They are reaches with your current stats, but if you retake the ACT for a 30+ then you have a strong chance.

I would highly recommend retaking the ACT. As it stands, you’re an almost certain rejection at UNC, and NCSU is 50/50. If you could raise it up a couple of points, it would raise your chances at NCSU significantly. If you could break through with a 30, then UNC would be a decent shot.

My friend (who graduated as my class valedictorian) got rejected from NC State and UNC. For North Carolina residents, those schools are pretty competitive. I’m not deterring you from applying, just be aware that nothing is guaranteed. Those schools are MUCH easier to get into from out of state. I agree with everyone else, retake your ACT. Might as well, you have plenty of time. Good luck! I graduated from high school in Charlotte NC in June.

^ UNC is not much easier to get into from OOS.

OP what part of the state are you from?

@haileyhensley1 This is not correct. The stats of OOS students at UNC/NC State are higher than those for NC residents. It is quite a bit easier for NC students to be admitted/

Have you thought about App State or UNC Asheville? Also UNC G has a good teaching program.

I’m from Lewiston…so two hours away from Raleigh and four from UNC. Does this matter?

It is my understanding that the school is looking to increase students from the more rural or underrepresented parts of the state.

I definitely recommend taking the ACT again… you have strong reading and writing scores, so a slight bump in math and science can do lots of raising to your score. If you can push the ACT up to 30 (practice books, online tests), I think your chances are strong at at least one of the universities. You’re almost there, just push through this last stretch.
