What are my chances of getting off the waitlist? (Cornell, U.Chi, UCLA, Berkeley, Tufts)

Also sold photography at an art fair (altho this is a lil random) and have won some scholastic silver keys

Planning on probably committing to Haverford unless I suddenly fall in love with UCSD. What are my chances on the waitlist?

it looks like you were accepted to 5 great colleges so far.

Two serious questions:

  1. Why do all the work to apply to all those colleges if you didn’t want to attend? Makes sense to change your mind on one or two, but you don’t seem to like any of the 5 acceptances and also note you wouldn’t have gone to 2 others that rejected your app. That’s a lot of work to apply to all those places if you don’t want to go there. Possible these are actually good places that would be OK since you at least thought they were OK a few months ago?

  2. This is a good place to vent. It stinks to get rejections and feeling angry is normal. Are you just venting? Because if you are, you should probably clarify that or people will take you very literally and start replying to your question about why you didn’t get in. IMHO, that won’t help you and will only make you feel worse.

Scores are probably a tiny bit low for your demographic.

Out of the rest of those schools, there are much worse places to spend 4 years than San Diego! It would be quite a change from NYC.

Please read this post: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/2067880-why-you-didnt-get-in.html#latest

@milee30 No I am actually pretty happy with UCSD and Haverford and probably will commit to Haverford if nothing else works out. Tufts has been in my top 4 for a while though so I really would love to go there. I guess the post was mainly for venting but also to see other people’s opinions. Thanks for such a thoughtful reply

Awesome!!! Both UCSD and Haverford are great schools and you have your choice. No matter what else happens, this is good stuff and hopefully what you’ll be focused on soon. Vent away and then celebrate your good news.

You’ve got some terrific options.

I’ve said it elsewhere, but college admissions really really isn’t about racking up trophies.

It’s about trying to get at least one good opportunity and then making the most of that opportunity (you can only matriculate to one college/uni).

My daughter’s 2 very good friends went to Haverford and had good experience. One friend went to work at Goldman after graduation.

@milee30 for the UK schools I suspect she applied to 5 because it’s no more work or money to apply at 5 it’s all one app with literally no customization per school.

OP you have great choices what’s your major?

@VikiSoCal I’m looking to major in psych/neuro and and am intrigued by the cognitive science major And yes you’re right I kind of just looked at the rankings of UK schools and applied to the top 5/names I knew. (In hindsight maybe not the greatest idea!)

Wow, Haverford is an amazing intellectual community, not competitive among students, a vibe of “doing your own best” whatever that may be. Academic options are expanded with Bryn Mawr a mile away and the two schools coordinating class times so that students can easily take classes at each campus.

If you greatly prefer Tufts over Haverford or your other choices, then ask your GC to call Tufts and say you will attend if admitted off the waitlist. And, choose among your current choices, pay the deposit, and if you get off the waitlist, in May or over the summer, you can decide then.

I personally would choose Haverford even with the option of Tufts.

When you look at alumni accomplishments, Haverford is one of the few LACs that is a true Ivy-equivalent (Tufts would be a Near-Ivy).

agree with @Purple Titan on this one. Medford isn’t a great location and although I went to Tufts Med School, I don’t think the undergrad college has as much panache unless you are admitted to one of the specialty schools.

You have MANY excellent acceptances (and I completely agree about Haverford. EXCELLENT school!) Enjoy them! And read THIS thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/21393160#Comment_21393160

Thanks @PurpleTitan What do you think makes it “Ivy-equivalent”? What other LACs would you include in that list?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1893105-ivy-equivalents-ranking-based-on-alumni-outcomes-take-2-1-p1.html

I’m in the middle of revising it (giving bonus points for being top 20 per capita to top MBA, JD, MD, and PhD programs) and a bunch of LACs (other than WASP and Haverford) drop off. Bowdoin, Wesleyan, and CMC would be borderline.

How important is music/orchestra to you? My violinist daughter (also concert mistress for school orchestra and youth orchestra and went to NY Conference All State and All Eastern) didn’t love the music program at Haverford. Other than that though, we loved that school.

@Earthmama68 I’m definitely interested in keeping up private lessons but it is not a huge priority. Also interested in keeping up chamber music or an ensemble of some sort. What kind of music opportunities has your daughter found at Haverford?

I’m a Haverford student and I think the music program is solid. Music is housed at Haverford but Bryn Mawr students also take classes and participate in the ensembles. The ensembles are combined between Haverford and Bryn Mawr students. I believe private lessons are also subsidized if you are on financial aid.

@tonroxmysox are you a musician? How difficult is it to get into ensembles?

More generally, I’m pretty sure I will be committing to Haverford soon! My only hesitation is the size. How do you feel about the size? Also, how often do you take advantage of the swarthmore penn connections? Thanks for the response!
