I am a high school junior, just wondering that if I took 2 honors during freshman year, 2 honors during sophomore year and taking 2 AP , 1 AICE and 2 honors this year, once I am almost a 4.0 unweight every time. What are my chances of going to a top 100 college/university.
It depends…
What would you like to major in? For engineering, computer science, and some nursing, STEM, and business programs, every college in the top 100 is more competitive than the college on the whole, making most of them at least a low reach.
Also, we don’t know how you’re doing compared to your high school class. For T20 (even T30) colleges, you should be taking the most rigorous coursework your high school offers and near the top of your class.
There is so much that goes into this. If your school offers Naviance, use it. At the very least talk to your guidance counselor, who will almost certainly know how many of your graduates get into T100s every year.
More information would indeed be helpful. For example some majors such as computer science and engineering are more competitive compared to other majors.
However, I have met multiple students who went to universities in the “top 100” range with very few AP classes. A lot of A’s plus very few B’s is not enough for Harvard or Stanford, but is very helpful for a lot of universities ranked between 60 and 100.
Your guidance counselor should indeed have a very good sense of which students get into top 100 universities.
Thanks, the major I wanna take is computer science or software engineering. You think if I get a good sat score and plenty of community hours, Would I have a chance?
What is your unweighted GPA? What year of high school are you in?
Also, what is your home state?
CS is one of the most competitive majors.
You will need to show that you took rigorous courses that were available to you at your school. The information you shared is too vague for anyone to even remotely chance you. Some high schools restrict the number of honors and APs available to students, others do not. You will be assessed in the context of your school. As suggested above, talk to your guidance counselor.
Be sure that you have taken a course in bio, chem, and physics, and one of those AP. Also that you reached calculus or the highest level of math offered at your school.
UW GPA and test scores will matter.
There is also a big difference between schools in the bottom of the T100 than the top.
Your instate options are always the first place you should explore. Talk to your parents about the budget. There are thousands of universities in the US, you will find the right ones to apply to!
I said on the top of the page, you probably didn’t see it.
I live in Florida, for instate, my goal is UF. I don’t know many college out of state.
I think that people have been reluctant to predict your chances since there is some uncertainty. Your test scores will matter and I gather you have not taken the SAT or ACT yet. You should plan to do some preparation for whichever test you take.
However, an unweighted GPA close to 4.0 (ie, nearly all A’s) plus even just a few AP classes is a very good start. I would expect this to get you into a “top 100” university. To me, assuming that your SAT scores are good, it does certainly look like it is worth applying to UF. I would recommend that you also apply to some other in-state public universities as well since my understanding is that UF is relatively competitive.
We live way north of you (no alligators, only a bit of snow left right now but more is probably on the way). Therefore we have not looked at any of the universities in Florida. Your guidance counselor should also have a pretty good sense of how you are doing.
Thank you for replying, I’ll try my best.
Your grades are excellent. If you can get a solid SAT score, UF would be a solid option for you. There’s also FSU and UCF. Florida has the lowest tuition rates in the country, so it would be very advantageous to stay in-state. Plus it has a strong tech economy, especially in the Tampa and Jacksonville areas.
