My rank is probably going to be around 13/640 in a very competitive school in alabama (top 5% school). Im taking a whole bunch of AP classes, probably have one of the hardest schedules in my grade. Have As in my AP classes.

I’m not sure if the ECs are enough to pull you through since the test scores, which are ok, don’t really stand out. Also, GPA and Essay are big factors. You have a 27% chance like everyone else.

If your rank is 13/640, I’m assuming that your GPA is in the area of 3.9. Your SATs are 1450. Thus, you are in the upper half of the mid 50% range. You have a very good chance of being accepted. I agree with Colleges00701. Below is the Emory profile:

Academics - Admitted Students
Average GPA, middle 50% 3.71 - 3.98 / 4.0 unweighted scale
SAT verbal, middle 50% 640–730
SAT math, middle 50% 660–750
SAT total, middle 50% 1320–1460
ACT, middle 50% 29–33

Okay thanks! But just in case, how high of an SAT score should I aim for? and is the writing section important? do colleges look at the writing section?

As I understand it, colleges take your highest SAT verbal and math scores, even if your highest were not from the same date, and they do not consider the writing scores. Who knows, though, whether they look at your lower scores and writing scores, especially when they are trying to choose among equally well-qualified applicants. In your case, you showed nice improvement on your second SAT test. It seems unlikely that you will improve significantly if you take the SATs a third time. You have very little room for improvement on your math score. I might forego the third test and take some SAT IIs. You would obviously do well in the SAT II math test. How about taking SAT II, Math-2 plus something else that you have done well in, and could prepare for? For ECs, can you volunteer somewhere, perhaps through your youth group? I think that summer volunteerism is great, as it does not interfere with your studies and senior year college application process.

I have a good chance of being the president of my youth group my senior yr and the yg pastor wants me to be a leader of a “skit club”…would that help?

idk about volunteering yet…ill definetly do some more. and im currently studying for the SAT and the SAT subject tests i know i can do a lot better in the CR and writing sections of the SAT…

wakka-Have you considered using your creativity and starting your own club or venture in the community that you could claim something that you founded and that served those around you, either at school or in your neighborhood/community?

hmmm…that’s something i should definetly do. me and my bro were thinking of starting a ping-pong club or an ultimate frisbee club… would that be good or does it seem too trivial?

The best ECs are the ones that show long-term commitment and leadership. Thus, founding the ping-pong club as a senior in high school might seem contrived and detract from a student like yourself who has a very good chance of being accepted at Emory and other very selective colleges. I like the idea of the skit club, as it is an offshoot of your youth group which has been important to you for a long time. Also, the skit club could help hone social and communication skills and be a lot of fun. You should probably stick with tennis for your senior year also.
