What are my chances/where else to apply?

I just got a rejection letter from my first choice (UMD) so now I’m freaking out a bit about my other options.

I’m OOS transfer, 3.12 cum gpa, english major at a CC in central Florida (60 credits, receiving my AA).
4.0 GPA this semester and last, 3.5 the one before that, the reason for my low cumulative is a semester of F’s and W’s my first year after a personal tragedy (which is explained in my essay).
I have a ton of EC’s: Editor In Chief of the Lit mag, published in the Lit mag, member of amnesty international, member of Visions & Voices (it’s like a creative writing workshop with renowned authors), member of the campus monthly writing group, volunteer at several different places.

I also applied to
Rutgers
Umass Amherst
Penn State

Is every moderately difficult school basically going to reject me because of my low cumulative? I don’t want to stay in Florida, and I don’t know where else to apply that is a larger school up north with a good lib arts program that isn’t going to reject me right off the bat :(

Florida participates in the Academic Common Market. Take a look at the second tier public universities in the other participating states and see if anything might work for you. Academic Common Market - Southern Regional Education Board;
