What are my chances??

Im currently a junior in high school and really want to go to a college in CA (around santa monica) Im an artsy person :slight_smile: and have thought about Art Institute of CA- LA, and also like UCLA, USC and santa monica cc. Ive also considered the new school in NYC, but really want to try out Cali, its been my college goal my entire high school carrier. I live in such a small town and I want to get as far away from it as I can, but since i was raised on the beach I still want that around!

For grade wise, my grades are not great. I have a weighted 3.3 gpa, but will go up since I am currently in 2 AP classes, and next year im in 3 more. Im from NC and AP classes here bring up your grade 2 levels, like a C in the class ends up as an A at the end of the year and so on. Ive taken the SAT once and bombed it (1200 combined with writing), my test taking is horrible and I end up driving my self crazy and unable to focus. I have the ACT next week tho which im studying for.

As for extra curricular, I really only do art stuff. Im trying to go to school for photography, thats my passion. Ive taken pictures my whole life. I have a family of artists so artsy stuff comes naturally. My dad got me really into it in 7th grade by buying me a nice camera, sending me on trips with pro photographers and making my own website just for fun in 8th grade and Ive gotten pretty good. Ive had pieces in art shows too.

Is there any chance that I would be able to get into a good (not outrages priced) school in CA? Is Santa Monica College expensive? What are my chances of getting into UCLA or USC or Art institute?

Thank you for all of your help!

Do you mean North Carolina? If so, that’s the best thing you have so far, as California schools are looking for out-of-state people for the added tuition (for public schools) and privates are trying to be national schools and get kids from every state. Also, what may seem not so outrageously priced to we who live in California might well seem outrageously priced to you. Publics you have to pay out-of-state and I think little chance for any aid, and privates you’ll have to get your grades and EC’s increased for any place like USC. Really, being from the South may be the ticket to get in–finances another issues.

Your chances of UCLA or USC are very poor. For the Art Institute you will need a portfolio. I would contact them to see what their admission requirements are.

For Santa Monica City College, remember to calculate the cost of living in the LA area. It’s very high.

@Calla1 has it right - your chances aren’t at all good at those schools. California Public colleges all use the same method to calculate GPA. They give 1 point for up to 8 semesters of AP/Honors, don’t include non-college prep courses and drop +/- from the calculation. You can read about it here:
<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

Also note that Califirnia public colleges are looking for you to have completed their list of required ‘a-g’ courses, they are somewhat different than other states. Be sure you’ve completed them all. Missing one will bounce an otherwise promising application.

Calla is also correct that you’ll need a portfolio for art centric schools, it is impossible for a bystander to really assess your chances - though good grades and test scores never hurt here too.

I’d suggest you use an on-line prep site to really get ready for the ACT/SAT and take both another time. Plan your Sr schedule to be sure you complete the a-g requirements.

An 1800 SAT and 3.3 GPA will probably get you into CSU Long Beach.
