What are my chances?

My name is Katelin Nitschke and I would love to hear what your thoughts are on my chances are of getting accepted to the University of Michigan. The first thing you should know about me is that I am going to college so that I may eventually earn my PhD in physics, with my focus being on astrophysics and theoretical physics. I am an 18 year old who is apart of the Blue Water Middle College Academy program which is a program that has allowed to me to start taking college classes at the age of 16 for my junior and senior year of high school and for an additional year after my junior and senior year at Saint Clair County Community College. I am currently in my additional year after completing my high school classes and I will be graduating from Saint Clair County Community College in May of 2014 and will have earned my associate degree in arts through a Liberal Arts Transfer program. I have currently completed 48 college credits and am taking an additional 18 credits worth of classes (5 classes) this semester. My current classes are Calculus 2, Astronomy of the Stars, Intermediate Acting, Abnormal Psychology, and Microcomputer Applications. My current college GPA is 3.617.

For activities section I listed the following: Yale High School Drama Club (7 plays and musicals), Yale High School Choir member, a Volunteer T-Ball coach, participated in raising money for and participating in walks for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research, Had 2 ceramic pieces in a college art show, a member of the SC4 Players (Drama Club at my college, I have performed in one of the plays so far), a member of a different drama club at my college, and a previous 4-H member who won many awards including a few grand and reserve champion awards.

ACT test scores:
Composite: 24
English:23
Mathematics: 25
Reading: 26
Science: 22
Writing: 10 (out of 12)

I am a very strong writer so my essays are of high quality. I have strong recommendations from Calculus and Acting professors, along with the man who is in charge of the Blue Water Middle College Academy. I am also a first generation college student. I recently applied to be apart of the Community College Summer Fellowship at the University of Michigan. My application is a freshmen application due to the fact that the Blue Water Middle College Academy is considered to be my high school.

Thanks for your time!

While you have an interesting academic and extracurricular background, those ACT scores are really low for Michigan. The English and mathematics scores especially stand out to me–with the essay score you have, I would expect your English score to be higher, and the math score should be stronger for an aspiring physicist. Your GPA is good but not outstanding. I would definitely consider Michigan a reach for you, but best of luck.

Please consider editing out your name- this is a public website and that is too much information.

UM uses a holistic application approach: GPA, course rigor, testing, recommendations, essays and extracurriculars.

I see a weakness in your testing and GPA that does not correlate to your desired career path, and it is very low for UM. There are four other points of admission, so maybe, but admissions are highly competitive at UM. You are instate, which is a very slight advantage. The school report your counselor submitted will show the nature of your charter school, and the rigor of your courses.

Unfortunately, UM is not particularly known for taking transfer credits from community colleges, which is stated on your current school’s website.

I wish you the best of luck, but I think UM is very much a reach for you. Reading your school’s website and where students matriculated, it looks like there might be other schools that are a better match.
