What are "red flags" of being a nerd/geek?

What are some things that would show you as an archetypal nerd or geek that you should avoid saying or implying on essays in order to show that you do have a social life and would interact with people, not lock yourself up and play video games, on campus?

Colleges want diverse types of people at their school. If being a geek is your thing, don’t be afraid to show it. If you’re not social you don’t have to lie and say you are, but yeah I wouldn’t talk about locking yourself in your room and playing video games all day.

Some schools like geeks and specifically look for that type.

When teacher recs indicate your social ineptitude.

LOL I hope that never happens…I mean I wouldn’t characterize myself as a nerd or a geek, and I like interacting with other people more than playing video games, I was just wondering about things not to say in the essays.

globaldolphin- my guess is that it is more about what you DO say in your essays, not about what you fo not to say. Not sure what the prompt is, but if you can incorporate instances of enjoying spending time with people and doing things with people, you should not come across as someone that spends the majority of their day holed up in a room with your nose in a computer/book.

My son included in one of his essays that he was known for putting together a last minute tennis tournament on a warm saturday, or planning a LARPing event with friends on weekends. OK, so the LARPing may sound nerdy, maybe even teeters on geeky, but at least it shows depth and assocaition with people.
