MN-hot dish, walleye, wild rice, salted nut roll and nut goodie candy.
I like perch better than walleye. Sue me!
I thought everyone did fish fry on Friday.
A lot of places/areas/regions do fish fry on Fridays. My personal favorites are Haddock and Walleye. Cod is considered a lesser/cheaper fish where I grew up - something mainly used when there wasn’t anything else, though always offered as there are some fans and it’s less expensive. Perch and Walleye are offered when available. Catfish too as I’m thinking about it. They often run out of Haddock.
But pretty much anywhere we go we’ve seen fish fry Fridays at the very least as specials in restaurants, but often as special beach, club, or fundraiser offerings as mentioned on here.
As I type I’m watching Bald Eagles and Osprey fish for their breakfasts (in front of FIL’s river cottage) and I’m wondering if they have a favorite catch! Of course, I’m also wondering why any “claw sized” fish hang out in the water within reach of the birds. One would think they’d swim deeper!
Nobody has mentioned TexMex yet?? It’s probably what I miss most about living in Texas. The chili and BBQ is also excellent, of course. Ugh, I always gain weight when I visit Austin.
Yep, lobster in Maine is hard to beat. I love going to the seafood counter at our grocery store and asking them to steam a few lobsters for me, at no extra charge. A lot of times, I can get it for a ridiculously low price, like $6.99/pound.
Hannaford has lobster on sale again this week for $5.99/lb.
Nashville- Hot chicken. Nothing like it! Also- Meat & Three (home cooking). You pick a meat and 3 sides. I didn’t know what that was when I moved to TN in 2006.
Philadelphia- definitely cheesesteaks, TastyKakes (we can get them in TN now) and Shoofly Pie. I also miss Philadelphia Italian food and pizza.
I miss good Italian, good middle eastern and good Chinese food. I live in an ethnic food desert.
Not regional, but cannolis from Mike’s Pastry in Boston’s North End, though the locals will tell you to get them from Modern Pastry the next block down.
Definitely, Modern Pastry over Mike’s. Bova’s, which is open 24/7 has the best rainbow cookies.
Our local TexMex place sells their tamales vacuum packed for carry out as well as freshly steamed. I felt better about shelter in place after we had four dozen in the freezer. And @WayOutWestMom , I always have cans of Hatch brand green enchilada sauce in my pantry - which is what I serve with the chicken tamales.
More Philly foods - Roast pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone over cheesesteak any day. Water (wooder) Ice, preferably at John’s in the Italian Market area because the Italian Market area should be visited for a lot of other food related reasons.
In addition to barbeque, I think it’s interesting the regional differences in pizza. Coast to coast and in-between.
Another vote for Modern Cannolis!
I like many forms of pizza but really like Detroit style.
After hearing so much hype about New Haven pizza, especially Frank Pepe’s, trying it was a bit of a letdown.
Kansas City burnt ends
Raleigh hush puppies
New Orleans fried chicken
L.A. sushi & experience, Nobu (Malibu)
I was thinking about this last night when we ordered “bar pizza” here in the northeast. Bar pizza is the perfect take out food for those concerned about Covid contamination. These pizzas are all 10" and essentially personal pizzas. When you get them home it’s extremely easy to transfer your entire pizza to a standard size plate and discard the box. It makes clean up/decontamination a breeze and you get to enjoy your food more quickly than other types.
Growing up in Massachusetts there were two locations, Lynwood and Town Spa, that were perennial contenders for the “best bar pizza.” I was recently made aware that Town Spa will ship their pizzas to you anywhere in the country. Apparently they partially cook them prior to packaging. You simply throw them in the oven, or on the grill to reheat/recook. I plan to ship some to my son this week!
If you’re curious about what bar pizza even is there’s a youtube video about Town Spa. Just search for Town Spa Story.
Texas: Brisket!!!
And Tex-Mex of course!
I am really learning a lot from this thread. I am realizing I am not the “foodie” that I thought I was! @GKUnion , I grew up in Boston and am embarrassed to say I have never heard of bar pizza. It might be a “south shore” thing. For us good pizza was from Santarpios by the airport or Regina in the north end.
I think steak tips might be a northeastern thing. I have never seen them anywhere else.
@xyz123a Steak tips from the NewBridge Cafe in Chelsea, MA are not to be missed!
I can’t believe you’re talking about Lynwood’s. My husband and his brother (from the south shore) would go there every Sunday as teenagers/young adults. When we were first dating (1980), I got dragged along on a Sunday or two. I don’t remember the pizza as being anything special, after all the brothers’ hype. Guess it has lasted the test of time. Thanks for the memory.
