What are regional foods I must try?

When you say Tex Mex, don’t forget breakfast tacos.

“Steak tips from the NewBridge Cafe in Chelsea, MA are not to be missed!”
(Sorry I don’t know how to quote)

@GKUnion - now that is one I know and could not agree more!! I actually use a recipe that is supposed to be the New Bridge’s secret marinade (it is easy to find on line) whenever I make steak tips at home. Not exactly the same, but very good nonetheless.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned east coast oysters. I’m a fan–love Blue Point (LI), Wellfleet (MA), Malpeque (PEI) and Island Creek (MA).

Or migas!

How have I lived an hour or less from Detroit all my life and not known about Detroit pizza! Describe it please! And if you have a restaurant recommendation, post it please!

Detroit pizza is square or rectangular with a thick crust - crispy on the outside and fluffier in the middle, kind of like foccacia but crisper crust. The cheese gets caramelized and crispy on the edges.

Ahh I looked it up. We just call that “pizza” - lol! What is regular is one place is unique in another!! I am often a fan of the rectangle shaped pizza.

The talk of Cheerwine and Vernor’s made me think of another regional soda. Big Red soda in Texas.

And Moxie in New England. I don’t care for it but one of my kids loves it.

We have some awesome breakfast burrito options in CO. It was a new thing to me when we moved to CO from NY, but I have assumed they are popular everywhere now.

California-ceviche at Paradise Cove
Virginia-Polyface Farm’s chicken
Alaska-fresh Copper River salmon

Rhode Island Clam Chowder. It’s a clear broth and so good.

Clam fritters are known as Clam Cakes. They are a fritter not like crab cake at all.

Someone mentioned clam bakes. Huge piles of food crates on top of hot stones and seaweed covered by a tarp while the bake does it magic. It’s a show in and of itself. It ends up with -Yes chowder separately but the bake is locally sourced Steamers which are a soft shell clam that you remove and dip in melted butter. it also includes a pouch with potatoes, Portuguese chorizo, onions and sometimes a hotdog. It’s more like they are steamed than baked. There is also a baked white fish wrapped in brown paper, it’s a big picnic

New Jersey

Taylor Ham, egg and cheese on a roll

French fries with brown gravy (AKA Disco Fries)

fuggedaboutit!!!

Back in the day, Buddy’s Pizza used to be the place to go for pizza in Detroit. Not sure if that is still true though.

Voodoo doughnuts from Portland

From San Francisco:

Cioppino: a rich fish stew created in SF

Dungeness Crab: A must at Christmas Eve dinners

Sourdough Bread: of course

Dim Sum, particularly with the steamed dumplings Xiao Long Bao

Oysters from Tomales Bay

Abalone, Olallieberry Pie and Artichoke Soup: Specialties of Duarte’s in Pescadero, coastal area just south of SF

I grew up in New Haven, too, Your theory is wrong. Definitely has nothing to do with Yale students spreading the word. There are also pizza wars over who has the best pizza - Sally’s, Pepe’s or Modern.

And whole belly clams at Jimmy’s of Savin Rock.

That is because Sally’s is better.

That is all wrong!

^^Are you saying that rectangle pizza is wrong??? I can find room to accommodate ALL kinds and shapes of pizza!!!
