What are residential learning communities (RLC) in college?

I’m going to JMU and I am confused as to what an RLC is.

I don’t know anything about JMU but my college has a similar idea (LLC’s). Basically its grouping living arrangements with shared interests. I think it’s a cool idea. Ours has music, movie, major related, green, international travel, tech, and much more. They usually aren’t tied to majors either so you could be a physics major in the business dorm, vice versa, or any combination you like.

Residential Learning Communities (RLC)
Students who participate in a Residential Learning Community get the unique opportunity to live and take classes with a small group of students who share similar interests.

The benefits of living in a Residential Learning Community include:

Special interaction with faculty members
Convenient, natural study group
Community service possibilities
A smooth start that weaves connections all across JMU
