I have a 3.25 GPA, and a 24 ACT (retake score pending). I have recommendations from teachers, a University of Michigan-Dearborn professor, and a few people in the Michigan House of Representatives. I have 100 volunteer hours. I am Captain of the Varsity Wrestling Team and on the JV Cross Country Team. I had an internship in the House of Representatives and an internship with the University of Michigan professor. I was on Student Council and received a Leadership Award, a Science Fair Honorable Mention, a Varsity Letter Award, and I am on the Honor Roll. I also have taken several honors courses and a very challenging college prep curriculm. I am also a michigan resident.

These are my credentials i want to major in marine biology or microbiology and eventually go to med schools. Looking at schools on the east coast (especially florida) that have strong marine biology programs. I like state schools but am also considering LACs.

JHU is great… they have one of the worlds best marine biology centres for research… then again its a HUUGGGGEEE reach for ya dude comparing the people there to ur high school credentials.

U Miami
Florida Institute of Technology
UNC Wilmington
Texas A&M
UC Santa Barbara
University of South Carolina - Columbia
Long Island University-Southhampton

For marine biology, I’d suggest programs that also work with local research institutes - however I do know that marine biology is not needed for a major, but rather a field you should go in as a graduate student, since it’s so narrow. Biology is better for an undergrad, due to the more general knowledge it covers.

Look at Wittenberg in Springfield OH. They have a good biology program with a marine science minor. They have a semester exchange program with Duke University Marine lab and a summer program in the Bahamas. Your grades and ACT would be in the ballpark there. Premed placement has traditionally been good there.

UMiami is amazing for marine biology. The school is right on Key Biscayne and it’s absolutely beautiful!! It would be a reach for you but maybe worth the application because you never know!

UMiami might be a very good fit for your marine bio interests. My husband went there for marine bio just a few years ago. You major in marine science and then put a specific on top of it, like bio or chem. So you end up with a double in marine science and biology (which would be good for pre-med). If you are interested in seeing marine life regularly, Miami is great. The scuba diving club goes on trips really regularly and everything is so close. The other schools (public U’s further North…can’t remember which ones). My husband also went abroad to Australia while at Miami and had a great experience. Definitely consider it. You are the same person that was looking for LAC in midwest and northeast, right? So which one is it? Are you open to the entire east coast? Is the marine bio the odd, limiting criterion? Or is it the money? The ‘quality’ of the school for your stats? It’s kind of confusing keeping track of your actual needs and interests…we could all be more helpful if you’d lay it all out there.

I dont want to go to the west coast as it would be too far away and expensive. The entire east is perfect, money is not really an issue its just we would like it to cost as little as possible. Schools with marine biology programs are important but someone told me majoring in marine bio is bad for undergraduate and you would want to major in it for graduate school. UMiami sounds perfect but I dont think I have a great shot of getting in. So I hope I covered everything if I missed something let me know.

Check out Coastal Carolina University. It’s by the beach and, at one point, they actually owned an island off the coast for research. Also, it’s not that hard to get into.

I agree with URI, I live in Rhode Island and we have some the best Ocean related courses in the country…Hell we even have Robert Ballard as a professor.

Obviously UMiami has been mentioned here quite frequently as it is the most well known in the field. Though a reach I feel it is an extremely plausible reach as I got into UM a year ago with a 3.4 UW and 1750 on the SAT. The trick is writing more essays than the required amount, sending a resume, and lots of letters of reccomendation. they look at that highly there.

Other great options:

Matches: University of South Florida: Located in Tampa, Fl. Has a marine campus in St. Petersburgh right on the beach. definately worth a look.

Safety: If you really like the Miami area, Florida International also has great programs at a much cheaper rate than UMiami (though not as prestigious).
