What are some good "safety schools" in Florida?

Hello! I applied to USF and Auburn but in case I don’t get into any of those schools, what are some really good “safety schools”. My dad is really anal about this, so no community colleges, please. I really want to go straight to a university when I’m done with high school…

A safety for one person could be a reach for another (based on how selective the college is, and based on financials.

Are you in-state at Florida? If so, check out the following matrix that compares the 12 Florida Public Universities:

http://www.flbog.edu/about/_doc/cod/asa/admission_2014/Final_Matrix.pdf

It shows the % of applicants accepted at each school, and the mid range of accepted students GPA and SAT scores. If you’re stats are toward the high end of this scale, the school is something of a safety (for admissions).

Good Luck!

What is your home state"

What are your stats?

What is your major?

Do you qualify for Bright Futures (if you’re a FL resident)

How much will your parents pay each year?

We can’t tell you safeties w/o stats info or affordability. Safeties have to be affordable!

I’m from Florida, but I really like Auburn’s nursing program. I’m planning on becoming a registered nurse and attending the Air Force ROTC program for Air Force nurses. What are my chances in these schools?

GPA: 3.76 (weighted)-I’m in the top 20% of my class
SAT: 1360 (I retook it but the scores hasn’t came out yet)
ACT: 19 (also retook but no scores yet)
Classes: All honors classes and 4 AP classes (my school doesn’t offer a lot of AP)

Why are your scores so low?

I have to be honest with you. I doubt anyone with scores like that make it thru Auburn’s BSN program.

You mention that you work at your parents Chinese restaurant. Have your parents said how much they’ll pay? If you were to get in to Auburn, it would cost them $40k per year…is that ok??

The nursing major is often more competitive for admission than the university (or community college) it is housed in. Many of the less selective universities in Florida have nursing majors, but you need to check whether the nursing majors are more selective than the universities. Of course, you need to check whether your parents will contribute enough to avoid having more debt than the federal direct loans.

Luckily, Florida has no shortage of nursing programs. Hopefully you can improve your scores. Then take a look at Florida’s other public universities, such as UNF, FIU, FAU, FGCU, UWF, etc. You always have the option of going to a local CC and then transferring to a University (at which point your test scores don’t matter, only your CC GPA). All of the local CC’s have transfer agreements with the state university system.

Good Luck!
