Rutgers would be a mid-range school for me, because some of my reach schools are: IU at Bloomington, UChicago, WashU at St. Louis, UNC Chapel Hill, Penn State, and University of Minnesota. I’m currently lacking middle to low (safety) schools like Rutgers, what are some other options? Thanks in advance.
TCNJ if your in state. It all really depends on what your major is. What do you plan on studying
Temple? Clemson? West VA?
Oops, sorry about that. I plan on studying marketing. Rutgers has a pretty good marketing program, but I was wondering about other options.
If you are instate NJ and have high stats the business school at TCNJ is one of the best on the East Coast.
Univ of Del. Univ of MD
TCNJ but it’s a bit of a reach. much more competitive than Rutgers but does have one of the top business schools
around. Very highly regarded, small school. Gets tougher each year to get in but if you do , it’s a great value and terrific business school with great internships, etc. Us news rates it as the #1 public college in the north and #3 regional university in the north overall. Really a gem in NJ.
OP - Rutgers is ranked as a national university, while TCNJ is ranked as a regional university. Comparing the USN rankings is not apples-to-apples.
The Rutgers name is much bigger in the US and worldwide. It’s your prototypical state flagship research university with tons of programs and courses from which to choose.
TCNJ is more like a small public school with some of the attributes of a private – fewer courses/programs and research than Rutgers, but mostly smaller class sizes.
SUNY Buffalo may be a good option. You can look into other SUNY schools as well. The SUNY schools have very good OOS rates as well.
@stones3 Does TCNJ really have a good business school? I was always under the impression that rutgers was a bit better.
There are a lot of similar schools in the northeast. Everyone who applied to Rutgers from my high school also applied to University of Delaware, University to Connecticut, University of Maryland, University of Mass (Amherst), and Quinnipiac. Maybe SUNY Binghampton and Stony Brook.
What is your home state? Can your family afford the OOS public Us?
TCNJ is an obvious choice - excellent school overall, academically very competitive and with slightly higher stats than Rutgers. The difference is in the Honors College (1400’s/3.9+ at Rutgers) but the TCNJ business school definitely holds more than its own at the undergraduate level compared to Rutgers’.
Rutgers:
SAT Math: 631 average, 570-690 range of middle 50%
SAT Critical Reading: 581 average, 520-640 range of middle 50%
SAT Writing: 596 average, 540-650 range
SAT Math: 629 average
580-680 range of middle 50%
SAT Critical Reading: 606 average
550-660 range of middle 50%
SAT Writing: 613 average
560-670 range
What’s your budget?
An issue with all these OOS universities is that they’d be quite expensive without possibility of financial aid.
TCNJ business school is rated by bloomberg as #63 in the country that’s vs ALL schools not just regional or national.
While Rutgers new brunswick was ranked #118. Keep in mind this is referring to the undergraduate program . TCNJ has a much better undergraduate program and doesn’t offer an MBA program but many of its students have moved on to top MBA programs and top internships.
TCNJ is the #3 ranked top school in the north for regional university by usnews.
That’s been a fairly straight climb up for the past 25 years and has been the #1 ranked public all that time in the category.
It is a relatively small school of 7,000 and could probably be most compared to a NESCAC type school in terms of the campus, without the price tag. With a 13-1 student:teacher ratio, small class size of about 21 . Excellent b school, Excellent STEM.
oh and the accounting program was just ranked #20 in the nation as well.
also Barrons list TCNJ as one of the 75 MOST academically competive schools in the nation.
So in response to prezbucky- It’s not just a small public with… It’s one of the top schools in the nation and it’s here in
NJ and for those with good stats its a gem.
