What are some strong art ECs?

I am interested in communication design and journalism. I have significant experience and ECs relating to journalism, but few for art (besides my very satisfying IB Art class).

Would the following be good ECs for art/design?

 • submissions on a blog or online magazine
 • local art exhibitions
 • designing posters/flyers for school clubs

Any other ideas?? I’m really passionate about art but kind of at a loss as to how to show it …

Any of those would be good, as would taking a good art class outside of school at a Saturday program or summer program. You can also show your interest by doing a lot of sketching and drawing from things around you and if you interview at schools, bring your sketch books as well as your portfolio. Good luck.

Thanks! I love my art workbook (an IB requirement that I have taken to the extreme) and I think it would be great to bring it to interviews.

Are you familiar with National Portfolio Days? They are held all over the country and are set up so that schools review the work of students generally junior and senior year. It is a great way to get a read on what the particular school is looking for. Also, if you are a junior, it is great to go to as many reviewers as possible, even if it is not a school you want, as the reviewers will give you lots of great input.

I’ve heard of them but didn’t really pursue it … I think that would be a really good experience. Are there many regular universities that participate (as opposed to just art schools)?

[National Portfolio Day - Home](http://portfolioday.net/) << Here’s all the info on National Portfolio Days for the upcoming school year (2012 - 2013). You are on the right track with your ECs, and definitely show your sketchbook! Good luck!

Thank you!!

Winning an award from Scholastic is also pretty prestigious in the artistic as well as the literary world. You’ve probably done it already through your school, but just putting that out there.
