What are the Art Foundation Studio courses like?

The classes meet 6 house a week for only 3 credit hours. Why are they so long? What do you do in the studio courses? Is the work rigorous? Are they very instructional or much more relaxed?

With the mandatory 3 foundation courses, would I be able to handle two more classes? Or just one?

I’m heading into my sophomore year as a stamps student at umich. The curriculum they are using just started last year so it might be different for you than it was for me if they rework things based on feedback. But I’d say my first semester was pretty rigorous. I did approximately 10-12 projects in all three studios (that was 2d, 3d, and drawing 1 for me), some more intensive than others. The studios are 3 hours so that you have enough time to work on projects during class time while factoring in discussion/prep/clean up etc. It also generally takes 3 hours to critique everyone’s projects in a class of 20. As far as other classes, I only took one elective but we also had to take an academic art class called art and design in context. I’m not sure if that applies to you. If so, with 3 studios, ADC, and the stamps lecture you’d only have enough room to take one more class.

Was ADC a writing course? Did you take a first year writing course?

I’m dual enrolled in Stamps and LSA- residential college, so I believe I will take my 3 foundation courses, lecture series, my first year writing course with residential college, and an LSA first year seminar. I don’t want my first semester to be too rigorous, but I have to take quite a few credits because of my dual enrollment and I don’t have any time to spare.

Overall, how do you like Stamps? I’ll be getting a BA as opposed to a BFA because I’m more interested in academics than fine arts. I’ll just be trying out the whole art school thing my first semester, depending on how I like it, I may or may not drop it and just pursue an LSA degree.
