Well, it’s true and people name their kids in interesting ways as this thread points out.
@zoosermom, as long as she stays away from Pendragon!
Made the huge mistake of pausing on the show “Bring It” (think Dance Moms of the south) and the teacher was reading the names of the girls who made a particular team…included on the list were twins Star and Sky, Canary, and a few others that had me confused…Chicken Little? That’s gotta be a nickname. Lots of “made up” names…and then there was Alyssa. Her name sounded so out of place with all of the very unique names that came before hers. Won’t be watching again…Outlander is back, so I’ll be hanging out with Jamie and Claire. Love those names. Or maybe I just love the kilts
If we were having this discussion in 1960, people would probably be complaining about that “newfangled” name Alyssa, and what are parents thinking naming their child something so bizarre…
I haven’t read the thread, so perhaps this one has been discussed already. My Norwegian grandfather’s name was Odd.
I watch this show; their older sister is Sunjai.
In my family tree, there was a man named Osage Orange Hedges. He went by the nickname “Toot”. I believe
his father was an English Immigrant named Alfred. I can’t figure out why he would give his son this unusual name, just wrong on so many levels.
never mind
Zipyourlips, I had a Norwegian neighbor named Ott when I was a young teen. He was in college and quite handsome. I’m certain of the spelling because I asked him. (How else would I know how to doodle “Mrs. Ott Norwegianguy” on my binder?)
Perhaps Odd was a spelling variation of Ott rather than the English word for strange?
@HeartArt - Another name for an Osage Orange (type of tree) is a Hedge apple. I just thought it was funny.
From an article in the Daily Mail - Children’s Names: Alfa, Mercedes, Porsche, and Frank

Kid has a KISS shirt. Parenting done right!
“Joy and her partner Kevin Smith, 26, have another son named Frank”
Poor Frank. He probably feels so left out… needs to be renamed.
Maybe it’s short for Frankenstein. There is a monster truck with that name.
Didn’t Sigourney Weaver change her name from Susan because her brothers had names like Magnus?
Sigourney Weaver told one of the celebrity reporters that she had named her daughters Regan and Goneril. It got into print.
One of my secretaries had an uncle that she referred to as Uncle Serf. I think his actual name was Serefino, or something like that.
Onward, you are right, osage orange is another name for the hedge apple. Apparently the small trees are also grown as hedges or wind breaks. It is funny, but why make a joke out of a name? I can’t understand why his parents would do such a thing. Osage Orange Hedges had a son named Walter Raleigh Hedges. So maybe strange names were a family tradition.
Was the Sigourney Weaver quote re Goneril and Regan a joke? I can’t imagine anyone naming their kids after a couple of the most notorious villain-offspring in all of Shakespeare!
H had an uncle named Oke.
Its Norwegian/
OMG – check this out. I’m rolling on the floor laughing.
