What are the best and worst things about Dartmouth?

Aside from academics (which I already know are great), what are the best and worst things about Dartmouth? For example, I’m afraid the small-ish undergraduate class size and cold climate may be a problem. However, I’ve also heard that the students are all amazingly passionate, spirited, and intelligent (while being modest about it) and the faculty is good. Please help me if you can!

Hey jbean welcome to CC! I’m a current Dartmouth student, and actually have an ongoing thread where I, and some other awesome Dartmouth students, are answering questions. We’ve covered some of the pro’s and con’s in that thread, so I’d encourage you to give it a read over and if you have any additional questions feel free to ask :)

EDIT: here’s the link  http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/dartmouth-college/779421-ask-dartmouth-student.html</a></p>

Okay thanks!

The worst thing is that everyone’s sick right now. Nasty cold and flu everywhere.

On the ‘best things’ side, this older thread may interest you. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/dartmouth-college/716963-why-dartmouth.html?highlight=things</a></p>

At 5000 undergrads, D is not what I would call a small school. Most of the elite LACs are half that size. It only looks small when you compare it to gigantic midwestern state Us.

It is small compared to other Ivy League schools, other elite research universities and most major state schools.

It’s the smallest Ivy but it usually does not feel that small… at least to me.
BEST things: Most everybody here loves dartmouth (school spirit is huge, inc w/ alums); it is big enough that you will find where you fit in socially and also clubs, sports, activities you love; the professors are awesome, usually (plus no TAs teach); it’s beautiful (the buildings, the green, Hanover, the mountains, etc etc)
WORST things (IMO): the social scene = drinking warm beer in nasty-smelling frat basements; not enough emphasis on the arts; many people are preppy, image-conscious, materialistic econ majors

I think you’re exaggerating both the lack of social variety and the preppiness. Maybe I’m wrong though…anyway I’d like to hammer home the point that (almost) everyone who goes here loves it. That’s one of the best things about this school.

This is one that my D says is true. EWWWW…

Including his inaugural address, Pres. Kim has spoken about alcohol and the Greek scene. Hmmmmmmm.

Great question! Thanks for asking.

Good: Baker Library

Bad: The only vending machine is a long walk from Baker Library.

AP: What about the vending machines down by novak? or novak itself? (when it’s open)

That’s the one I was referring to. I hate walking from 3rd floor Baker to Novak at post-midnight, lol. :D

You’ve been there two weeks…how would you know?

Burn!! jk, jk. Thanks for your help, everybody! Dartmouth seems like a really great school. I’m definitely going to apply and I hope I can get in! Thank you again!

Haha, I’ve been here a month now, and to be fair that’s not much to go on…I can only judge based on my own experiences, which are the basis of my opinion. I have not noticed very much preppiness (is that a word?) at all, especially in comparison to other elite schools that I visited. I assume you have some more expertise on the subject, unless you’re just being a [censored] for no reason. In that case I defer to your opinion.
Good luck, jbean!

I’d have to say that the number of really smart uber nerds is basically zero, especially when compared to stanford, mit, harvard, princeton. Though the general social intelligence level here is pretty high and people seem much more socially adept than other campuses.
