what are the best business internships out there??

do you guys know of the best places for business internships?

do business internships really open your eyes to the business world??

summer internship at an investment bank (the real kind, where you work actual 100+ hour weeks and get paid, completed between your junior and senior year of college)

Always nice to have Big Four internships on your resume!

how is it possible to work a 100+ hour week? I think that’s impossible.
Anyway, I’m a high school student, and I guess it’s too late for me anyway, as I’m going to be a senior next year.
It’s just that I really want to get into Wharton, and I don’t have anything business-related on my app, except that I’ll be taking A.P. Microecon next year, and my passion of course…

We’re talking about internships for college students, a high school kid would even be considered for the best business internships. Keyword best. 100+ long work week means working all day of the week. It’s possible my friend just did 135 hours a week for ibanking internship.

Internships high school kids do are generally nothing too helpful. Your best bet would be to obtain leadership positions in clubs, initiate community service projects, that sort of thing.

And 100 hours a week is entirely possibe. I know people who have worked more. 100 hours a week / 7 days a week = a bit over 14 hrs a day, add some hours for time wasted, getting to and from work, maybe 4 hours of sleep and you should get a good idea of how it is.

During deal time some people may have to pull double or tripe all nighters to get things done.

It depends on what you mean by “best”. If you’re meaning the most helpful in teaching you about the business world and helping you develop sharper skills and a larger business accumen, then it could be a number of places I would imagine.

If you want an internship that would be considered most prestigous and perhaps more impressive than shoot for one of the an investment bank, consulting firm, or a fortune 500 company. Those are just some ideas off of the top of my head. If you want to know names of what companies are considered “prestigous” in the i-bank and consulting world go to Vault.com and see some of their rankings. They also have links to company websites where you could find info on their internships.

Like a previous post just said, internships at the top banks (see the vault guide) will always look very promising on any resume. Of course from there it depends on what you accomplishment at these firms that matters. Additionally it depends on what field you are interested in as every firm shares their own prestige in thir specific sector (Ex: Goldman Sachs = I-banking, Bear Stearns = Fixed Income, McKinsey = Consulting, etc.) In general, prestige is a relative idea but generally name recognition is a huge component of it.

um, most prestigious?
D.E. Shaw and Blackstone for the ones that are possible
Renaissance and KKR for the ones that aren’t possible

but yea basically any big company with name recognition
and if you’re in hs dont bother

Heh I know of kids that have had internships at firms of that caliber while they are in high school. Of course luck plays a good role in the process but it can still be done. (Naturally going through the HR route isn’t going to work).

for most of the people I know who did top tier internships in high school, it didn’t end up helping them that much in college (well maybe in college admissions)
I’m not sure why, but it seems like you’re almost better off travelling for the summer, in hs

Pretty much the opposite experience for me.

I dont know how HS kids supposedly got these top spots. They certaintly were NOT Wall Streets top firms. They wont even look at you until you are a junior!!

I’ve seen it; and including me from my school 5 or 6 kids a year get top-tier front office jobs as a sophomore in college, so the junior thing isn’t true

I myself intern at a selective firm (quant trading firm). I believe I am the youngest guy they took in. The kids in they hire are typically in college or in top PhD programs (they only hire from the top unis with very good science/math/engineering graduate departments like MIT/Caltech/HP (not Y)…Dartmouth/Brown isn’t actually on their recruiting list).
A friend of mine has interned at a BB ibank last summer and this summer. He is heading to college this fall.

I got an internship at a “top wall street” investment banking firm right after my freshman year of college. Rare but it happens.

I’ve looked at some ibanking websites, and most say that they only consider juniors for internships. Does anyone know at which BB banks people younger than juniors have been able to get internships despite this obstacle?

look for regionals or be some superstar at your school.

There is logic in them setting up an internship program for juniors, it allows them to recruit the good juniors for full time positions during their senior year.

nana you had a slight advantage though being in NYC and all
