My daughter is applying to college now. I am curious as to peoples opinion on which schools have the best vocal performance training inside a musical theater curriculum.

Best is difficult to define. I find the relationship between a voice teacher and a student is a personal connection. I think the best thing for you to do is look up the voice faculty at the well known schools and read their bio’s. There are so many great teachers out there.

I agree with beenthereMTdad, sometimes its just finding a teacher that works well with you. You may want to find out about the music programs at the schools your D is applying to and the theatre program’s involvement with the other.

Also, while voice is obviously a critical component of a MT program, don’t under value the importance of acting. Strong acting skills are important not only to be able to “act the song” but, in addition, will enable a performer to audition for a much broader range of theater as well as camera performance opportunities.

If you are looking for VP training inside an MT program, I would highly suggest Oklahoma City University.

Both MT and VP degrees are Bachelor of Music degrees. Both MTs and VPs take four semesters of music theory, aural skills, and piano, and MTs are also required to take classical english diction.

Music theatre majors must also perform a 30 minute, all-classical voice recital as their junior recital component.

Each semester, half of their voice repertoire must be classical music, as well.
