What are the best residential medical summer programs?

What are the best summer programs for high schoolers interested in medicine/health-related professions held at universities? It must be a residential where you live in the school’s dorm, etc. All will be considered, but I more interested in more selective ones. Experiences/advice would be a plus. Thanks!!!

NYLF-MED. It’s offered all over the country. You should choose a college in an area where you’re interested in attending, if it’s not located in a college you’re interested in attending. You’ll get a feel for the culture of people you’ll be studying with. And you can combine a college visit while you’re up there.

It gives you a chance to live in a dorm, eat dorm food, make friends, and learn if medicine is for you.

My son did NYLF-MED in Chicago. He stayed at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He got to stay in a dorm, eat dorm food, and most of the people attending were from the Midwest. When we picked him up, we drove up to Milwaukee to visit Marquette, his top choice for college. We drove through Northwestern and by Loyola Chicago. So we got some cursory, as well as a detailed college visit.

One great thing he got to do was go to a medical school and see a cadaver lab. They also got to see a video surgery. Many kids fainted, threw up. I thought it was great that they had an opportunity to get that out of their system before they actually attended medical school for real. For instance, many of them said, Surgery is definitely not for me.

It’s pricey, and I don’t know how selective it is or how good it will look on a resume, but that wasn’t our point in doing it. Son is interested in biomed engineering, and we thought it would a good exposure for him. And he’s an only child, and he wants to go away to college, so we thought this would be a good introduction to life on his own and in a community.

Many other students at our school had done it before and enjoyed it, and many of his classmates attended sessions in other locations. All found it to be a good experience.

Google NYLF National Youth Leadership Forum.

any other recommendations?

I believe Vanderbilt has some sort of medical program but google Vanderbilt Gifted Summer Program and something will come up. It’s fairly competitive and seems like a solid program.
