What are the best websites for looking at the stock market and also getting information on the basics of the stock market?

Fidelity has a lot of analyst opinion but I usually do my own research in buying and selling stocks because analysts opinions should be taken with a grain of salt. I usually use msn.com and look for investing. If your a beginner investor I suggest reading the Intelligent Investor. It is a fantastic book on investing and I recommend for everyone to read it.

Check out The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing by Jason Kelly for the basics.

For charts, [Yahoo! Finance - Business Finance, Stock Market, Quotes, News](http://finance.yahoo.com/) works perfectly fine.

It should be said though that researching and buying individual securities takes a lot of time and isn’t particularly effective for the average investor. So much is automated these days, and there are always too many bigger players with faster, more advanced, and more insider information compared to you.

Alternatives include collective funds - mutual funds, real estate investment trusts (REITs), index funds (tracks the market), etc.
