Seriously.

@CalvinCoolidge said it all. C’mon man. Some of these questions…

um srsly it could be the subject of a phdcomics comic too. lots of our anxieties are absurd.

Dude, it’s not like you can do anything short of changing your own habits if anyone said, “Yes.” What will you do? Stay in your room all the time?

And obviously, everyone has different experiences. It’s on a case-by-case basis.

“Lots of our anxieties are absurd.”

That’s true, but we don’t need to make a thread about each of our absurd anxieties.

Yeah bro, don’t you know? You aren’t actually allowed to post questions on college confidential. That’s just as absurd as your anxieties. It’s common knowledge that CC is only meant to be used as an internet search database in which you look up knowledge that has been on here since the dawn of time. HOW DARE YOU! WHAT ARE YOU EVEN THINKING??? GET OUTTA HERE!!! UChicago should deny you on the spot.

What’s bizarre about this question is that the relationship between a PhD candidate and his or her thesis advisor is usually an extremely close one that, in essence, continues for the rest of their lives. During the period when the thesis is really being framed and researched, which is to say years 2-4 of most types of programs, it is especially intimate and intense. Almost all of it occurs “outside of class”, often with lots of exposure to each other’s personal life, very master-servant.

If you can’t handle that with some shred of self-respect and adult behavior, you are going to have big problems. Time to grow up and deal with it.
