@mom2collegekids wait I just looked at my EFC and its 164409 not 180000. for example, NYU will end up costing like 230000+ dollars so will they try and compensate for the rest of the money that is over my EFC?
Your EFC is per year…not for all four years. Your family would be expected to pay up to $164,000 for ONE year of college…not all four years. Luckily…no colleges cost that much. But NYU, for example, is $72,000 per year.
Your family would not receive need based aid because your annual EFC exceeds the annual, cost of attendance at all of your colleges,
@thumper1 my parents as I said will help me out but Im just trying to be considerate of their help and seeing if I can do anything to make it easier for them. that is all.
Well @TexasDA…just wait and see. Hopefully they will help, you out by paying the full, cost.
You can help by getting a job to earn your own spending money. You can alsomtake the $5500 federally funded student loan.
And you might get merit from someplace.
@thumper1 why does SMU give so much $ away?

YOUR EFC for 4 years would be $660k…so NYU’s total cost of $230k is far less that the total of your EFC for four years.

Please find out what that means. $20k per year? $10k per year? $40k per year? WHAT?
SMU is far less competitive for admissions than your other schools. Younstand a better chance of getting merit aid there because you will be a higher stats applicant in their accepted student group (hopefully…for you).
Schools give merit aid to tippy top applicants.
But I thought Cox was really good
@mom2collegekids I haven’t asked but all they said was that i will need to get a job while I study
In case @AboutTheSame was referring to me – I hope my comment didn’t come off badly, OP. New users are often surprised that other people can access their post history, so I just wanted to point out that it is directly accessible from your profile (“directly” or “easily” probably better for what I meant than “clearly”).
@thumper1 ok that makes sense
Cox is a good business school. SMU in general has less competitive admissions than the other schools on your list. That’s all I’m saying.
At this point…just wait and see. You will have your acceptances and any merit aid you receive in a few weeks.
And getting a job while in college…and the summers…not a bad thing anyway. It’s good to have work experience when you get ready to apply for jobs after you get your degree.
@thumper1 do schools usually tell you how much $ they will give on the April 1 decision date or does that come later?
You should get a merit aid award either with your acceptance or shortly thereafter…if you get accepted.
The admissions office usually sends the merit awards, so if you have a question, call them when the time comes.
@thumper1 I’ll just wait for April 1 crossing my fingers and see what I get. Thanks for being very helpful you helped clear up a lot of questions I had that i didn’t know who to ask. Thanks again.
Good luck…and hope it all works out!
@TexasDa They aren’t short on donations. SMU is located in an enclave of Dallas that is 95-98 percent white with a median family income of more than 200,000. It has no shortage of big-time donors. The houses surrounding the school are HUGE and the area reeks of old money.
@Hamlon see that’s what I thought cause my friends and other people have told me that SMU gives a lot of $.
I want to weigh in here. Yes, SMU is located in a wealthy area of Dallas. But it’s location really has no bearing on the wealth of the school.
We toured SMU with our kids. Granted thismwas twn years ago or,more…but the, school hasn’t changed that much.
But merit aid is NOT awarded based on the geographic wealthy location of the college. It’s awarded based on the strength of an applicant’s application relative to the rest of the applicant pool. Merit aid typically goes to top applicants.
This student’s stats are stronger at SMU than at…BC or Emory, for example. So hismchance of getting merit aid is higher at SMU. Additionally…Emory and BC don’t give much merit aid…making it more competitive.
