What are the characteristics of Harvard Students?

Firstly, I don’t want to know my chances for getting in. I am a 20 year old student at Longview Community College in Lees Summit, MO studying for an Associates in Chemistry and Biology(because of the overlap). I realize that the chance of me getting in at the undergraduate level is impossible. The question I have is as Harvard students(current or former) what traits do you have? Even if you don’t think they are relevant I would love to know. I am interested in going to Harvard Business school at the graduate level and I have talked to a former student of Harvard(which doesn’t mean much of course). One question that I didn’t want to ask him was what is the admissions process like today compared to about 30 years ago? Were you a entrepreneur before you attended Harvard? What is your IQ? What are your interests? What do you think of the companies that say they will help you get into Ivy League schools? Has anyone tried these? Are any Harvard students or alumni Anarchist or Atheist? Listeners of FreeDomain Radio? Do you read frequently? Are these questions even relevant?

I’m a Harvard parent rather than a Harvard student, but I’ll tell you what I have observed.

Harvard students are a varied group, so it’s hard to generalize, but in my experience the traits that many of them share in common are smart, hard-working, motivated, articulate, and witty.

LIke selective admissions everywhere, the process has gotten bigger and more intense over the years. I have no direct experience from 30 years ago. You’d need to talk to parent and child who both went to Harvard to get this insight.

Were you a entrepreneur before you attended Harvard?

My daughter was not an entrepreneur, but one of her dorm-mates was. Remember that most Harvard students on CC are going to be students at Harvard College rather than the business school, so entrepreneurship is less relevant for them.

What is your IQ?

Nearly al Harvard students are very bright, but I doubt that many know their numerical IQs. Nobody regularly discusses this sort of thing.

What are your interests?

Harvard students are very varied and have many different interests. This is reflected in the dozens and dozens of clubs and organizations at Harvard.

What do you think of the companies that say they will help you get into Ivy League schools? Has anyone tried these?

Haven’t tried them, but I doubt that there is any one Big Secret to Getting Into Harvard that these business can bestow upon you.

Are any Harvard students or alumni Anarchist or Atheist? Listeners of FreeDomain Radio?

I’m sure you can find all types at Harvard, but I don’t have the impression that anarchy is a political philosophy widely embraced anywhere, including Harvard.

Do you read frequently?

Most Harvard students that I know are avid readers. It’s true of other high-end colleges too.

Are these questions even relevant?

Some of your questions are relevant but many are not. Also, keep in mind that many students at Harvard Business School went undergrad somewhere other than Harvard College, so stereotypes of Harvard College kids may not apply to HBS students.
