What are the cons in applying to general curriculum?

Like a lot of people, I’m not sure about what I want my major to be. I wanted to know what are the cons in applying to general curriculum? Will it be difficult to declare a major around my sophomore year (engineering is at the top of my list)?

Almost all General Curriculums switch majors…it’s really a lot less hard than it seems. One of my friend, in his sophomore year, just switched from Aviation to Psychology. Another switched from Music to Nursing.
Getting into Engineering might be difficult…but if you have the right stats, then it shouldn’t be a problem… they do reserve spots for transfer students, and already-attending kids get a higher priority than, say, if you were at Loyola or something.

If your grades are so-so, however, where it isn’t a definite that you’ll get into UIUC, then General Curriculum might hurt…if you don’t show motivation in what you’re doing.
My brother had a 30 ACT, low honor roll in school, and got rejected from UIUC under General Curriculum… and we all thought it was 'cause he only had band and track as ECs…and his essays were so-so…so nothing to really show that you have any direction in life…

For most of your majors, you’ll learn the same things as everyone else in your first two years, anyways. So you don’t really have to worry credits transfering. Just make sure you talk to someone in guidance to make sure you take all the required courses for a transfer.

if costs is not an issue apply for general engineering to get a better idea if its good for you or not.

Iheartpacman, how late did your brother apply?

He applied regular decision; around December, i believe… perhaps not. It was two years ago, so i’m not quite sure.

Is it true if you transfer you’ll finish in 3 yrs?

Depends what major you are in. Engineering requires 128 credits to graduate, Business requires 124 credits to graduate.
