What are the differences between Math 2412 and Math 2312?

Hellol, my name is Josh. I need to take Calculus 1 this Fall, so I took Trig Math 1316 and Precal Math 2412 at a community college to satisfy the requirement for Calculus 1. I just found out that my school UTSA requires a different precal than Math 2412, they want Math 2312 which is also called Pre-Cal. I don’t understand what’s the difference between the 2 clases, can anybody help me out here please? thanks :)

I wouldn’t worry about it that much if you’re taking calculus 1 at your community college. If Math 2312 is required to get calc 1 just take that class instead.

Do you have the course descriptions for each class? Precalculus should cover both College Algebra and Trigonometry. If the course descriptions are the same, show the adviser the descriptions. If they don’t allow you to go into Calculus I with your knowledge (having taken both precalc and trig) then tell them you will drop every class you have and go elsewhere.

Course numbers don’t line up at all schools. Actually, very rarely do the line up between schools. The numbering systems are relatively arbitrary and specific to the school.

People often think that higher numbered courses are harder courses. But…that’s not true. At my school for instance, Calculus 1 is 203, Calc II is 204, Calc III is 205, Differential Equations is 211, and Linear Algebra is 231. Elementary Statistics is 240.

I’ve talked to people before who were under the impression that since stats was numbered 240, it must be a more difficult class than Calc, Diff EQ, or Linear Algebra. Clearly, this isn’t the case.

Precalculus is precalculus. As long as your course covered both college algebra and trigonometry, you should be fine. Just compare the two course descriptions side by side and make sure that they line up. I imagine you’ll be fine.
