I heard that many have fireplaces and are very spacious. Is this true?

The fireplace myth isn’t true - most, if not all the dorms that were constructed with fireplaces have them boarded up. I’m almost 100% sure you can’t use the fireplaces because it’s a fire hazard.

The dorm situations are extremely varied during your freshman year. The bottom is the River, which are considered the worst places to live on campus, although I’ve heard that people who live there get really close and tight-knit, while the top is Fahey-Mclane, which is considered excellent even for seniors.

The size of the rooms are pretty average for a college - my room during my freshman year was about twice the size of my room at home. However, some people get stuck with one-room doubles, which can get cramped.

In my opinion, freshman dorms, unless you live in Fahey, aren’t palaces but nor are they cupboards. Completely average.

The River isn’t actually that bad compared to other schools - it’s just that compared to all the other dorms on campus it looks really out of place and is pretty isolated. The River actually has 3-room doubles (at least in French hall) though which are very spacious.

I would say McLaughlin are the best dorms for first-years. Since the two-room Fahey-McLane’s are now all triples for freshmen, they will get a little cramped. McLaughlin has the same setup as Fahey-McLane, just that it’s a little farther away from the center of campus and it’s freshmen two-room are still just doubles.
