I am an adult heading to college for the 1st time this fall. I have my GED and am aiming towards a Medical Office Assistant Certificate. I will be attending a community college in upstate NY. I am trying to get a general idea of what the general Ed requiremtns are. I did take placement tests. Scored well on the english but failed the math.

That kind of depends. Since you’re shooting for a certificate, rather than a degree, the GenEd requirements won’t be as extensive. At my community college, students that are enrolled in certificate programs don’t even really have “GenEd’s” so to speak.

For example, here are the requirements for the Medical Office Assistant Certificate at my school. [Program: Office and Administrative Services: Medical Office - Sauk Valley Community College - Acalog ACMS?](http://catalog.svcc.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=5&poid=540&returnto=159)

All of the courses basically pertain directly to the major field of study. A lot of that is going to depend on the school though. Some schools may require some type of English/writing course. An introductory communications course could be beneficial, because you’ll likely have a job where communication is essential. The program at my school doesn’t require any math, but yours might.

If you look around on your schools website, there should be some kind of outline of the requirements for the certificate on there.
