<p>In high school, I understand that some people will only talk to people who are of at least equal standing on the social ladder as them.</p>
<p>But in college, doesn’t all that not apply anymore?</p>
<p>If that’s the case, what are the main reasons why a stranger that you approach would act cold to you/seem disinterested in becoming friends with you? Or do the jocks still think that they are better than the nerdy-looking people?</p>
<p>If anything, the “nerd shall inherent the earth” in college. Of course, I don’t mean your absurd, socially awkward kind, but just your standard nerd: highly interested in a few esoteric subjects, intellectually curious, and smart. Most people in college like intelligence–hence, why they’re in college. </p>
<p>In college, in my opinion, jocks are somewhat looked down upon. I know here at UNC, a lot of people I know rag on the jocks because had it not been for their athletic abilities, they wouldn’t be here in the first place (and by “jock” I mean mainly football and basketball players, the two most ubiquitous sports at UNC).</p>
<p>In no hierarchical order, I would say college is segmented like this: Frats, GDIs (goddamn independents, or, those who aren’t in frats/sororities), and athletes. Nerds blend in well with the GDI population–which is usually the majority.</p>
