What are the most annoying threads on CC?

Threads that are a thinly veiled knock at current events, but pretend to be something else. Then the thread rapidly evolves into something that will get it shut down.

Now I’ve seen (and been annoyed by) it all: a thread by a HS student worried about their grade in PE

PE is included in GPA at D’s school, so keeping a high grade in it is important.

My latest peeve is the specific college threads for RD where the neurotic applicants come to say, “omg, you guys! I’m so totally nervous! You all are def going to get in! I hope I do, too!” Over and over again, every day, until a week before acceptances come out (shifting to, “omg, you guys! When are they supposed to update the portal? I’m so totally nervous!!”).

I get the purpose and allure for those who participate; I just prefer a bit more action/advice in my threads. Just walk away…

PE is required and included in the GPA/Rank in our Texas School…so it MATTERS.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
On a related subject of annoying threads: posters getting into sidebar conversations on how HS’s include/don’t include PE in GPA/rank and what it means to autoadmit colleges. If you want to start a new thread, be my guest. 5 posts deleted.

Not a new phenomenon. Those threads have been around for years.

However, that brings up a similarly annoying thread: I got a C in PE because I (pick one) did not go to class/did not wear the uniform/did not do the out of class requirements. Help!!!

Well, you got what you deserved. If you did not do your math homework, would you be surprised when your HW/participation grade drops? Yeesh.

Any adcom who looks at the transcript (ie, competitive holistics,) is not worried about PE, unless you got below a C, which, of course, raises questions.

What annoys me is the intense poster focus on gpa, forgetting that’s just a number and the transcript is much more revealing.

Threads created to be light hearted and fun but get polluted by posters who are condescending and show negativity.
If you have nothing positive to contribute please go on to another thread otherwise you will be reported and but on the ignore list.

Threads that ask people’s opinions but then the OP decides he or she needs a safe space.

^oh that definitely. I wrote “lol” under one that said “give it to me, truth, borderline insults accepted”. They PMd me that they not appreciate my sarcastic remark! Lol! Oops, did I again!

The constant drumbeat of who is the poorest, most frugal, how you can live on less posts, no matter the topic!

And the folks who have a million$ in retirement at 50, but kiddo has to borrow for college. This will just delay kiddo’s ability to save for retirement. (It’s their choice, but having paid loans until I was 35, it’s one I would not make my kid do if I didn’t have to!)

Threads that basically come down to:
How can I be deceptive in order to get in state tuition at an OOS college?
and
How can I lie about my income/assets in order to get my student’s EFC down to an amount I am willing to pay.

They are usually not in such blunt terms but that is what they are trying to do.

Not threads, but the posts where someone tries to make a general statement based on 1 or 2 anecdotes. It’s even worse when those anecdotes are 25+ years old.

All the questions that are just so suspicious, like they are trying to trip up OPs. Yes, some lie, but people are chasing off kids that need help with that behavior. That is really why the board is here!

When a couple of math heads take a practical question into the theoretical netherworld. And won’t stop.

@lookingforward:
LOL! That reminds me of the book “Cryptonomicon” where the main character, Waterhouse, is this math genius who flunks out of engineering school because he is a theoretical type, and because he is no longer in college gets drafted into the Navy. They give him an aptitude test, that has one of the famous word problems where a sailor can row 3 mph on still water, the river has a 1mph current going south, he has to row north x miles then south, how fast will he make it"…anyway, he figures they couldn’t want something as silly as the algebraic solution, so gets to pondering about how the current really flows, finds a new theorem in the process, and proves it…so all he has to show is he didn’t finish any of the questions, so the navy figures he is an idiot and makes him a glockenspiel player on a battleship…

Lol!

When posters refer to “we” rather than to their child re accomplishments that should solely be the child’s: “We scored 30 on the first ACT” or “We have acceptances to 3 schools with merit.” No problem when it’s something that should be a joint effort: “We visited 8 schools” or “We considered a number of LACs.” But too much identifying with the kid’s results annoys me.

The “we” problem was discussed here for years. It always rubs me the wrong way when I hear this complain. Yes, we visited schools and we considered schools to apply because we have to pay. So it is a team effort.

I get the team effort, so it generally doesn’t bug me, but “we” certainly didn’t score 30 on the ACT or get a 4.0, so that sort of statement makes me crazy. And if “we” did, I imagine all sorts of officials would like to know about it, lol!

“We” visited schools (yeah, I was allowed to come along). “We” stopped there.
